It’s no surprise that anyone stupid enough to want to get rid of Obamacare might also be stupid enough to think that elected politicians can be successfully sued for failing to keep their campaign promises.

He was a DINO in the first place (he only switched to Democrat last year after a career as a Republican), so unless WV has one of those laws that say a replacement Senate appointment must be of the same party as the departing Senator, he would have been naming a Republican, anyway. His Democraticness was less than skin-deep…it was like one of those rub-on tattoos.

> This is totally not sour grapes … but the party affiliation of a governor means doodly-squat. If he had said “yesterday I believe in progressive liberalism but now I’ve seen the error of my ways” that would be one thing, but he’s the same guy today he was last week. He just changed the letter after his name, which means he plays on a different softball team during the annual Gubernatorial Camp-out.

It sounds to me like he was a Democrat much in the same way that NY mayor Michael “Nanny State” Bloomberg was a Republican - he needed to get on the ticket and that’s where the opening was. This happens sometimes in Deep Blue New York City, because many times the real election is the primary and the Republican ticket consists of some guy that owns a car dealership, the gym teacher at a Catholic high school and Bernie Goetz.

But I think the greater story is the reddening, as it were, of West Virginia because I would only expect this in a deep red or deep blue state and WV used to be blue, then purple, then light red. It means the Democrats can no longer carry a viable candidate- the choice seems to have been between a noxious fat cat Republican and an even more noxious fat cat Republican. The best explanation I can come up with is that despair and OxyContin turns Democrats into Republicans.

But the downside of running as a Democrat is that Democrats might expect you to act at least a little bit like a Democrat, which can be difficult when every position you have on every issue is the complete opposite of the Democratic platform. So switching makes sense.

>
> The Justice Department has reversed its position in a high-profile voting case in Ohio, siding with the state in its effort to purge thousands of people from its rolls for not voting in recent elections.
>
> The move is part of a broader campaign by the Trump administration to support restrictions on who is eligible to vote, a radical change in philosophy from the previous Justice Department, which sued a number of states over voting laws that it deemed discriminatory against minorities.
>
> In a court filing late Monday, Justice Department attorneys took the opposite position from the Obama administration in a case that involves Ohio’s removal last year of tens of thousands of inactive voters from its voting rolls.
>
> In their brief, government lawyers say they reconsidered the Ohio vote-purging issue after the “change in Administrations,” and they argue that the state’s actions are legal under federal law. The case is headed next to the Supreme Court.
>
> Ohio’s procedure allows the state to purge voters who meet certain criteria for being inactive. If a voter has not cast a ballot in two years, the person is sent a notice asking them to confirm their registration. If the voter does not respond and does not cast a ballot over the next four years, the person is removed from the rolls.
> …
>
> “The law hasn’t changed since the department accurately told the court that Ohio’s voter purge was unlawful,” said Kristen Clarke, president and executive director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. “The facts haven’t changed. Only the leadership of the department has changed. The Justice Department’s latest action opens the door for wide-scale unlawful purging of the voter registration rolls across our country.”
> …

Remove them after TWO YEARS of inactivity? That’s a very short period of time. What about people who only vote in Presidential elections?

The article also says [emphasis added]:

> [@](#):
>
> The brief defends the process by noting that multiple steps are required before a voter is removed from the rolls.
>
> “Registrants are sent a notice because of that initial failure, but they are not removed unless they fail to respond \*\*and \*\*fail to vote for the additional period,” the brief says.
> …

So they can’t just reply, “I’m here and still alive”; they also have to vote in the next election.

That’s not what ‘and’ means - they have to not reply after two years \*\*and \*\*not vote. If they do either, they should stay registered.

Not that that isn’t a stupid standard, mind you.

So McCain had a brain tumor; what’s your excuse for voting in favor of repeal Senator Johnson?

1. The Kenyan got it passed.
2. Your campaign payoff was due.
3. You honestly don’t give a shit about folks losing their insurance while your insurance is still in place.
