As it is it’s just barely readable. William was the poorest stylist of the great mid-century Tolkien/Lewis/Williams triumvirate. By far the greatest of the period was Mervyn (Gormenghast) Peake, who unfortunately didn’t share the other three’s fancy-schmancy Oxford credentials, only having gone to Art School. Of course, HE has a self-portrait in London’s Portrait Gallery, and Tolkien/Lewis/Williams don’t. ---
