> But making monkey/ape comparisons about black people is not just a joke: it’s playing off centuries-old viciously racist ideas about the supposed inferiority of nonwhites. You can compare black public figures to vegetables, to cars, to trains, whatever non-racist comparison your clunky little brain thinks is funny. But for Ogsake **LAY OFF THE MONKEY/APE “JOKES” WHEN YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT BLACK PEOPLE**.

But that’s a double standard!! WAAAAAAAA!!! It’s not fair!

It is for them and, therefore, for everyone, which means they’re being punished for doing something we’re all thinking, they just had the bad luck to get caught. Yes, some nontrivial number of them actually believe that; it’s a small part of their underlying belief that they’re the majority, any evidence to the contrary is Liberal Deception, and any time they lose an election is Voter Fraud.

It justifies their behavior, you see, because the only people who are offended or even inconvenienced by it are not like them, and therefore a minority, and, really, nobody _truly_ cares what happens to minorities.

Sadly, we’ve had those people on this very board. One in the ‘not a joke’ thread right now. I’ve argued with them on FB and other places as well.

Yes, they honestly think that everyone is a racist but that us ‘virtue signallers’ are just pretending that we’re not in order to pretend that we’re better than them. :smack:

500lb bomb works to knock down walls too. And you’re sure to kill the shooter.

With that said, it is kind of an interesting idea. A compressed air fired ‘cannon’ that shoots water bottles to breach walls. ehhh. no. The last thing needed in crazy situations is something like that. And every fire department, and Police department is gonna want one. Training day just got a lot more fun.

If bullies are kicking people in the head, the solution is not to have everyone put on a helmet. The solution is to stop the bullies from kicking people in the head.

Sadly, the right wing have become extremists.

What I mean by that is that far too many of them only see the extremes. If people can’t own any gun they want, then obviously no one will be allowed to own any guns. If we regulate businesses, obviously we’ll micromanage them out of business. If people get punished for being racists (by companies and their fellow citizens), then it is instant Big Brother where no one can say anything without fear of the gubmit.

We can’t let gays serve in the military or everyone in the military will be forced to be gay. (Yes, I’ve heard that many times)

Slippery Slope has become the argument de jour. There are ONLY extremes.

Putting cannons in schools to blow down walls in case of a school shooting is a completely untenable idea for any number of reasons. But I don’t think your little aphorism really demonstrates much one way or the other. In some situations it’s reasonable to treat the source of the problem. In some it’s reasonable to protect from the effects of the problem. In many situations it’s reasonable to do both. Dunk Driving is a problem? Well, let’s have education campaigns and marches and publicity telling people not to drive drunk. Let’s also increase criminal penalties. Let’s also invest in breathalyzers. Let’s also have seatbelt laws. Let’s also have laws about crumple zones and crash survivability. Let’s also educate people about being extra cautious when driving late at night or on holidays. Etc, etc, etc.

And don’t forget [Super President!](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_President)

> The American President James Norcross (voiced by Paul Frees) is given superpowers as the result of a cosmic storm. The President now has increased strength and the Metamorpho-like ability to change his molecular composition at will to any form required (like granite, steel, ozone, water and even electricity). A hidden panel in the Oval Office allows him access to his secret base, a hidden cave beneath the “Presidential Mansion” (a somewhat modified White House). Super President travels either by using a futuristic automobile/aircraft/submarine called the Omnicar, or by using jets built into his belt.
>
> Despite the fact that the character’s name is “Super President,” for some reason only Norcross’ chubby, pipe-smoking advisor Jerry Sayles knows that the leader of the Free World is also a red and white-costumed superhero in his off-hours.

This isn’t stupid.

Stupid is a foot-bullet. Stupid is an unforced error. Stupid is hurting yourself, and this isn’t going to hurt him.

It’s distasteful to people who wouldn’t vote for him anyway, and that’s about it. It helps him rally his base, it gives his base that smug feeling in the bottom of their stomachs they get when they TRIGGER DUH LIBRULS, and the backlash he’s getting is another stick he can use to hurt his enemies: “SEE! They’re so offended by guns they can’t tolerate a real one! They’ll take yours, next! SEE! SEE! SEE!” and that’s a reasonable strategy for him.

This isn’t any dumber than any other toddler with indulgent parents throwing a fit in public: It gets them what they want, and if it isn’t a good long-term strategy, well, that isn’t part of their planning.

[“DeVos Says There’s One Thing Her School-Safety Commission Won’t Be Studying: Guns”](https://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2018/06/devos-school-safety-guns/562133/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+TheAtlantic+%28The+Atlantic+-+Master+Feed%29)

> [@](#):
>
> What should be on the list of tasks for President Trump’s newly minted school-safety commission, charged with studying what can be done to prevent campus violence?
>
> Perhaps the commission, chaired by U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, should look at mental-health resources and student-discipline practices. And perhaps it should consider the design of campus facilities. One thing that would seemingly be an obvious candidate for the commission’s scrutiny is guns, as guns have been the weapon of choice in every major school-violence incident this year.
>
> And yet it became clear on Tuesday, as DeVos testified in front of a Senate subcommittee to answer questions about the Education Department’s fiscal year 2019 budget request, that will likely not be the case. …Democratic Senators repeatedly asked DeVos how gun policy fits into the commission’s duties. She didn’t verbalize the G Word once, and at one point—in response to persistent questioning from Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy about the role of guns in school violence—DeVos dismissed that question as outside the commission’s charge. It’s up to Congress to debate gun control, she indicated; she and the commissioners are instead focusing their research on other potential sources of violence.
>
> “So we’ll look at gun violence in schools, but not look at guns,” Leahy, the subcommittee’s vice-chair, said at the end of his back-and-forth, after unsuccessfully pushing DeVos to opine on whether an 18-year-old should be able to easily purchase an AR-15 rifle and hundreds of rounds of ammunition. “That’s an interesting concept.”
> …

Yeah, other sources of campus violence. Like food fights, kids throwing erasers at each other, people getting their hands slammed in classroom doors. Yeah, those are the REAL dangers confronting school kids these days.

> [@](#):
>
> …DeVos’s admission stands in contrast with the duties the commission was given at the outset—in fact, examining age restrictions on certain firearm purchases is the first item on the White House’s bullet-point list detailing the commission’s areas of focus. When the Education Week reporter Andrew Ujifusa asked DeVos’s spokeswoman on Tuesday to clarify the matter, she emphasized that, unlike Congress, the commission can’t create or amend gun laws but confirmed that it will look into “all issues the President asked the committee to study”—a framing that appeared to contradict what DeVos had said in her testimony.
> …

If there’s one thing the members of this administration excel at, it’s contradicting themselves. Well, let’s call it what it is: lying. They’re all good at that.
