This week, a number of voters here in my town, including myself, got a mailer about the election for county commissioner, where a Democrat, Tye Menser, is challenging an incumbent independent, Bud Blake. (WA has a top-two primary, and as such there is no Republican on the ballot for this race.) This mailer, paid for by “Real Progressives in Thurston County”, calls on voters not to fall for the “fake progressive” that Menser allegedly is, and suggests writing in a vote for a “real progressive”, E.J. Zita, who currently sits on the port commission. There’s just one small problem. [Zita has no interest in the office and has endorsed Menser.](https://www.theolympian.com/news/politics-government/election/article220384705.html) “Real Progressives in Thurston County”, as it turns out, is owned by [a right-wing lawyer who specializes in filing bunko complaints against Democratic civil servants](https://www.thenewstribune.com/news/politics-government/article169489892.html), and who also operates groups that have sent out similar mailers elsewhere in the state, and the group’s primary source of funding is the county GOP committee. So just in case you thought Loser Donald was an aberration; he’s not. The Republican Party is evil all the way down. ---

As in Kansas, as on Capitol Hill, the Republicans are showing a bold willingness to defy these rules and norms, and they’re daring people to stop them. What’s happening now is the first real step toward a newer authoritarian America. Senator McConnell now seems to be echoing the President in referring to the opposition political party as a “mob,” which is laying the psychological pretext for a usurpation of conventional political authority. The Republicans are going to greater depths to delegitimize their opposition, regarding them not as political opponents, but as dangerous enemies who need to be controlled somehow. One has to speculate what that “somehow” is. ---

Of course the charges will eventually be dropped in most cases, but the chilling effect will be real. And the federal courts are less likely to stop them. ---
