I don’t have time to look it up, but I recall one of LBJ’s last speeches (perhaps the State of the Union) ending with a plaintive/whimsical wish that when people remembered his administration, they would think, “we tried.” I have a feeling that his wish has a significantly better chance of coming true than SHS’s hope. ---
