The Republicans may have moved from one of their base’s rallying cry (the wall), and into another, which is going after government employees. That’s what I keep coming back to: nothing is going to change unless something so bad happens that it forces people to reevaluate their value system. It’s easy to say “Let’s go bomb the shit out of some foreign country,” but societies that have been destroyed by war tend not to think in that fashion. It’s easy to say “Screw the homeless and the poor” but when it’s their home that’s getting padlocked, homeless suddenly becomes a more personal matter. People naturally have less empathy for people when they’ve never lived their experience. It’s inevitable: Trumpism will end when they’ve inflicted enough damage on the average person that the average person decides they’ve had enough of “I’m with stupid.” ---
