Don’t forget that while the Senate will never get a chance to vote on this thanks to Bitch McConnell, the House did. Every single Republican voted no.

I can give credit to the Republicans for one thing - ten years of calling everything they don’t like “socialism” is finally getting people to think that maybe socialism isn’t such a bad idea.

To be fair, I myself am comfortable with the idea of guilt by association, in certain circumstances.

For instance, being a member of the Republican Party makes one unfit to hold any elected office.

No doubt. The die-hards haven’t got the memo yet that the whole red-baiting thing is both beyond its sell date, and laughingly anachronistic in the “old man yells at clouds” way. It used to be that “commie” was the go-to slur for everything that was adverse to them, real or imagined, but now a politician using that word would find himself getting eye rolls from even other republicans, so childish and pat does it sound.

Sure, I’ll agree with that. However, they are going a few steps beyond, going to scorched earth, anyone and anything that you have associated with in the past type deal.

You join the [del]KKK[/del] Republican Party, you know what that’s all about.

If a republican happened to be in a social organization decades ago, it would require a certain level of pettiness to hold that against them(the organization).

Definitely dim-bulb stuff. But what do you want to bet that Congressional Republicans have been explicitly told to hit the “SOCIALISM!!!1!!!” scare-button as often and as loudly as possible?

They think this is a winning message.

And, in fact, they’re probably _right_ when it comes to voters “of a certain age” whose formative years included the Better Dead than Red philosophy being blasted at full strength.

Being “of a certain age” and then some — I remember diving under our desks every Wednesday at 2 pm when the air raid sirens were tested, and being told in all seriousness by several nuns that the Commies were Godless heathens who would put Catholics like us in the “meat grinder” — I have to think that there are other criteria. Such as having something less than the IQ that God gave mayonnaise, or a complete lack of critical thinking skills.

But that’s a thin needle to thread, given that you’re also telling those voters of a certain age that it’s OK for the Russians to control our elections.

And my favorite part of that Girl Scout article: His proof that the Girl Scouts are partisan is that only one Republican in Congress was a Girl Scout. Gee, I wonder why that might be?

I think elections aren’t won on facts, they are won on slogans.“The nightmare of socialism” is one Trump is already saying. “Baby killers” is another.

I think the fear of socialism in this country, and the misunderstading of what it is, may be a winning message. But if we can’t elect a progressive\* candidate now, then when?

\*Bernie is not going to get the nomination, IMO. The left wing of the Republican Party, i.e. the Democrats, will not allow it.

Nunes is advocating a one-size-fits-all approach, with restaurants making centralized decisions and doling out one straw per patron whether that person needs it or even wants it. And the alternative, where each individual can decide for him- or herself on the best way to meet their needs and pursue those goals however they see fit is socialism?

This was why I was not supportive of Kayla’s joining the fan club of Bernie in 2016. To her credit, she did not adhere to (or even threaten) _“You give us Bernie, or we’ll give you Trump [sic].”_ But during primary season, she would not be dissuaded.
