At this point, all Cruz knows is that the right wing base enjoys childish insults that are spewed forth with no forethought whatsoever. It does not matter who is being insulted, or why. That’s not the point. The point is to go “hurr hurr dat’s a good one” That’s all. That’s the level of right wing political sophistication now. And it’s not at the bottom yet. ---

That’s not the point. I disagree. They are very consciously picking targets that the conservative base already distrusts or dislikes to a significant extent. Occasionally they guess wrong, as when Trump assumed that insulting a couple of elderly Gold Star parents would go over well because the parents in question were nonwhite immigrant Muslims, but for the most part they are quite adept at “hurting the people” that their intended audience thinks “they ought to be hurting”.
