Dude, haven’t you heard ? There’s [a new Missile Gap](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=879940) ! And IIRC Trump also recently unilaterally withdrew from a nuclear agreement with Russia.
So things are looking up for the Terminator franchise. Me, I’m just in it for a half-decent \*Hackers \*remake.

Jul. 30, 2019
Senator Josh Hawley has introduced a bill requiring social media platforms to limit users to 30 minutes at a stretch without a positive action on their part to extend their time.

OK. lets assume we accept the excuse given, that the raid on illegal workers couldn’t be divulged to schools or child care workers in advance, for reasons of security. To protect the integrity of the operation. The security and integrity, yes.

So. there was a plan. Were there details of that plan? Budget, maybe?

Did they go to the trouble to ask anybody _anything_ at Child Services? Like, for instance, what is the cost for caring for a child who’s custodial care is suddenly vacated? Shit happens, sometimes the only custodial adult is the parent, who is arrested. Even in Mississippi, there are procedures and professionals. There are records, a number could be derived, what does it cost? What plans were made to reimburse the relevant agencies? How many such children were budgeted for? How many such child care workers might be required? What was the expected impact on child services? Even given the massive budgetary resources available in rural Mississippi…

Good starting point, how many such children might be expected? One, ten, a hundred? Was there an estimate made, based on any information at all? I would like to believe they had some idea, some info on the people they were going to swoop down upon. For instance, were they single parents? Were both parents working at the factory? How many kids did they have? I’d like to believe that, but I don’t.

According to lefty legend, Saul Alinsky is said to have remarked about Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin that they couldn’t organize a Hadassah luncheon. Where in hell do they get people like this, to plan stuff for them? I helped organize a softball tournament for hippy co-ops, we did a much better job.

Well, given all the news of people showing up armed at Wal-Marts now, I’m not sure I’d blame them for not at least offering (for a profit, of course) some kind of protection to their shoppers. Hmm…maybe I can get a nice weapon at my local Wal-Mart?

Oh, that’s right. I live in China where the carnage is limited by gun control laws. Also, major public transportation outfits (subways, inter-city buses, trains) screen all luggage and persons for weapons. The wife and I had to take a taxi home after buying kitchen cutlery because we couldn’t take knives sealed in those plastic oystershells onto the subway.

What’s the world coming to when the People’s Republic of China is better at taking care of its people than the United States of America?

You’re logicking from faulty premises. Your assumption is that they a) give one solitary shit about the kids, the people arrested, or even their employers b) someone, anyone, piped up with “eeer… what if they have wives and kids ? That they don’t take to the factory I mean ?” at any point in the proceedings c) that any planning (warning : assumes facts not in evidence) involved more than a long series of high fives, chest bumps and finger guns while America, Fuck Yeah played unironically in the background.

You left out dick measuring. And, sadly, I really don’t think that’s a euphemism here.

Likely big ones. Who ever is running a given division in ICE will want anyone with a dick larger than his to be given the boot.

[Here may be what it was really about.](https://www.democracynow.org/2019/8/8/headlines/ice_raids_targeted_company_whose_workers_won_discrimination_lawsuit) Once again, not a stupid idea, just an evil one.

> Last year, Koch Foods paid out $3.75 million to settle an Equal Employment Opportunities Commission class-action suit charging the company with sexual harassment, national origin and race discrimination, and retaliation against Latino workers at one of its Mississippi plants. Labor activists say it’s the latest raid to target factories where immigrant workers have organized unions, fought back against discrimination or challenged unsafe and unsanitary conditions.

(It would still be a crappy defense and it wouldn’t be anywhere near a justification, but I could at least sort of see that point of view.) But “I thought I was given an order 20 years after people stopped giving me orders”? Come on.

Well, to be honest, although I’ve been out a long, long time, if I saw Donny Two-scoops in a crosswalk in front of me, I’d be highly tempted to evoke the “against all enemies, foreign and domestic” clause of my enlistment oath.

Shush, you ! We’ve talked about this ! We must not talk about the G word when discussing mass shootings or possible solutions to alleviate them. That’s politicizing the issue and stuff. We all agreed to finger scapegoats and provide absurd, transparent distractions long enough for people to stop thinking about the gee you enns. Please do your part.

My wife’s brother is a cop in South Korea, and I had a couple of cop friends when I lived in Guangdong. They’re required to carry their service weapons and it’s not because the criminals are having a terrible time finding weapons, to include firearms.
