That’s not a stupid Republican idea, it’s a stupid Judeo-Christian idea (probably Muslim, too, since Islam is based on the same Abrahamic legends). If you think the Bible is the inspired word of God, then you have to believe that God wants homosexuals to be executed.

Along with adulterers, people who wash their car or mow their lawn or play softball on the Sabbath, brides who cannot prove that they were virgins on their wedding day, and betrothed maidens who are raped inside the city limits.

The Bible is ambiguous about a lot of things, but it’s crystal clear about those death penalties.

Jesus said (Matthew 5:18), “Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.”

Heaven and earth are still here, and Jesus hasn’t come down from the clouds to meet Christian zombies rising into the air, so not all has been fulfilled.

Are you being annoyingly pedantic for the heck of it, or are you honestly under the impression that acceptance of these particular stupid religious teachings is not noticeably tied to party identification?

I’m saying that whole-hearted, rather than half-hearted, acceptance of the Holy Scriptures you profess to believe in is not stupidity. It may be slightly more crazy, or significantly less hypocritical, but it’s not significantly more stupid.

Or perhaps you follow Papa Bear O’Reilly, who claims that Christianity is not a religion, it’s a philosophy?

Um, yeah, I guess your attention wandered before you read the quote from Matthew.

Jesus not only endorsed the Mosaic Law “until heaven and earth pass away,” he was stricter in his interpretation of it than most. For example, he said you were committing adultery if you even looked at a woman lustfully.

He _did_ forgive an adulteress in a [probably spurious verse](http://www.bible-researcher.com/adult.html), but he’s God, so he can do that in specific cases – for all we know, the woman was falsely accused in the first place. To take that as permission to disregard the entire Mosaic Law is egregiously twisting a cherry-picked verse to suit yourself. Although I think they’re crazy, I have much more respect for the integrity of the fundies, who take the Bible for what it says, rather than what they would like it to say.

And Paul, who by the way was not Jesus, took it upon himself to repeal the ceremonial and dietary aspects of the Law, but not the moral aspects, so at least he agreed with Jesus about that.

So the only true religion is one that never changes to fit the times?

Well, he has a point.
Religion, sort of by definition, involves the pretence of tapping into universal, timeless truths & principles. If the one true god (or the eternal wheel of kharma, or whatever trapping your denomination gives its source of hoodoo) thought the proper way to address gays was public stoning yesterday, but needs to think it over today, if in fact god \*can \*change his mind, then they are no god, just some cunt lived slightly longer than the rest of us, making it up as they go along like the rest of us. Worship that ? Never.
And if the one true god in fact still thinks it’s fabulous stoning time but _you_’d rather not go there, exactly whom are you a follower of, exactly ? One can’t half-follow universal timeless truths. You’re either in ; or you’ve come to your senses, need to come to grips with the cognitive dissonance, and cut the shit.

I’m not the one who brags about eternal truths, everlasting covenants, or absolute morality.

Stupid republican idea v. stupid idea core to a stupid republican – the difference is moot for the purposes of this thread.

That isn’t necessarily true. [Progressive revelation (Baháʼí) - Wikipedia](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_revelation_(Bah%C3%A1%27%C3%AD))

If we tell small children never to touch the stove, we are still their parents when they become teenagers and can handle a stove safely.

Ah, I see. We should teach small children to kill all gay people, but when they grow up, they may gain the wisdom to decide which gays should be allowed to live.

Thanks for clearing that up. Where can I get baptized?

You’re mixing a few things up (and you don’t really need to be so hostile and condescending). For starters, I am not a Christian and my faith doesn’t promote killing gay people and never has, so that is a strawman. I was not intending to witness, I just find weak arguments that use logic to try to divine God’s motivations which can’t be known obnoxious. And my example of “Don’t touch the stove” demonstrates progressive revelation. It’s true when you’re 5, then when you are old enough you can receive further instruction for what is appropriate. You don’t teach particle physics to illiterate goat herders on day 1, no matter how “true” it is. It’s a metaphor.

Fair enough, but for a couple of very dangerous fundie positions. First, god slew Onan because Onan jacked onto the ground. Second, licking one’s self is a homosexual act, and homosexual acts call for death. Too bad the Christian Right can’t tolerate individual rights and freedoms.

First. people 2,000 years ago who got Bible rev20 weren’t that much smarter or morally advanced than those who got Bible 1.0 about 800 - 1000 years earlier. Second, the writers of the Torah were not goatherds but priests living in a city. They wrote as if their old shepherd ancestors talked to God, but that was fiction.
Third, it isn’t that hard to rewrite Genesis at a high level and get the story right. I’ve done it. You don’t need physics, you just need to say it happened a long, long time ago, it took a long, long time, and to get the order of events right.
Metaphor? Not hardly, unless metaphor now means story written by people without a clue.
