This was an episode of _The West Wing_, you know. Bartlet wants to declare finding a cure for cancer within ten years. At the end of the episode (3x11, “100,000 Airplanes”) Joey Lucas tells Sam: “The Federal Government shouldn’t be directing scientific research.” “Why?” “Because you stink at it. ‘If it was up to the NIH to cure polio through a centrally directed program, you’d have the best iron lung in the world but not a polio vaccine.’” “When did you get an M.D.?” “I was just quoting Samuel Broder, the former director of the National Cancer Institute.” ---

When you take a kid who derives most of his self-esteem from the fact that he gets good grades and make him bring home a report card every month with straight As except for a big fat C in Writing, it’s pretty damn traumatic. I’m not even kidding when I say that one of the happiest days of my life was late in high school when I realized no one really gave a shit anymore and I could start printing. I never looked back. These days I can barely write my own name in cursive. (My signature, like that of most people who sign their name dozens of times every day, has become a distinctive but mostly illegible scrawl.) I feel comfortable saying that this has not affected my life in any negative way. What really makes me sick is that schools for whom art and music programs are distant memories are now going to be spending time and money teaching fucking Penmanship. Gah. (Sorry.
