[Federal judge rules drug testing for public assistance applicants is unconstitutional.](http://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/01/us/florida-law-on-drug-testing-for-welfare-is-struck-down.html?_r=0) Suck it, Rick Scott and all the other assholes who thought this was a good idea. They even continue to support it despite the fact that it caught so few people that it cost more to administer than it saved. ---

During a press conference on Tuesday, Erick Bennett, who is challenging incumbent Susan Collins, addressed his conviction for domestic violence against his now ex-wife. He fought the Class D assault conviction all the way to the Maine Supreme Judicial Court, which ruled that “sufficient evidence does exist in the record to support his conviction.” … He went on to claim that the time he spent in jail for his conviction speaks to “how much guts and integrity [he] has.” “The fact that I have been jailed repeatedly for not agreeing to admit to something I didn’t do should speak to the fact of how much guts and integrity I have,” he told the Bangor Daily News. …\* No comment. ---

He could be telling the truth, of course: his crazy ex accused him of terrible things that he never actually did. Poor guy! But somehow I don’t believe him. ---

You don’t need Men’s Rights Advocates to have a target constituency for that appeal. You only need rednecks. And Maine does have plenty of those. ---

Does Rand Paul count as a Republican? Apparently, he is [suing the government to stop the NSA](http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2014/01/rand-paul-is-suing-the-nsa.html). As one of a handful of rather powerful men in that same government, he seems incapable of functioning within the bounds of his elective office, so he has to try a ridiculous stunt like this. I think we might be witnessing his announcement as a candidate for the Presidency. ---
