I think he really means it:

Yeah, they live under the theocratic law that their King sees fit to impose on everyone else. Just think, America could have a state religion and finally do something about them gays, you know, just like it says in the Constitution!! A tiny group of nutjobs could impose their fundamentalism on 300 million Americans What could possibly go wrong?

Doesn’t seem like a good move to me.

Sure, you’d get all the Democrats who mistakenly think you’re Cesar Chavez, Jr., or get the nostalgia vote.

But you’d be voted down by all the people who’d mistake you for _Hugo_ Chavez. Or think you were Hugo Chavez Jr., or something.

They may not actually know much ABOUT them, or accept their religious beliefs, but they LOVE them.

I hate these obnoxious little labels, but I think you have finally found a circumstance where it is perfectly appropriate. Though Tealiban fits better here.

Stewart or Colbert last night (night before?) had a screen shot of his homepage. Full of picture of a crowd holding signs supporting Chavez.
Yup, it was apparently lifted from a Hugo Chavez election rally.

Now, getting back on track:

[Eric Cantor’s Pollster Blames Democrats For Stunning Loss](http://finance.yahoo.com/news/eric-cantors-pollster-blames-democrats-131901793.html)

> [@](#):
>
> Less than a week before Cantor’s upset loss, the pollster, John McLaughlin, released a survey indicating Cantor had a 62% to 28% lead over his Republican opponent, Dave Brat. Brat would go on to win by 11% — a huge, 45-point shift that was far outside the poll’s margin of error.
>
> In an interview with the National Journal after Tuesday’s election, McLaughlin accused Democrats, especially “Dukes of Hazard” actor Ben Jones, of meddling in the race…

Er… [nope](http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-fix/wp/2014/06/11/did-democratic-votes-doom-eric-cantor/):

> [@](#):
>
> If Democrats showed up in large numbers to vote against Cantor, turnout should have spiked highest from 2012 in Democratic-leaning areas, with Cantor seeing an especially large drop-off in support. In fact, turnout rose slightly more in counties that voted more heavily for Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election…

Maybe Mr. McLaughlin will have better luck “unskewing” his resume before he goes looking for a new job more suited to his talents.

I know the saying predates the slur, but in this context, it’s about as tone deaf as it’s possible to be.

I wasn’t aware that **Shayna** was a professional pollster who commands $75k fees. If I had, I certainly would have held her to the same standard as Mr McLaughlin.
