NC teacher perspective. 10 years ago, class size about 23, 24; wanted a raise, they said, okay, if you’ll teach more kids. Took raise, more kids, up to 26-27. Too hard. Wanted raise…they said, no, we’ll give you helpers (about 1/4 the cost of a teacher) but we have to increase the size of the classes, up to 30. Now. Want raise, no raise for 5 years…two proposals on the table for the Republicans to decide which to support…one, give 2% per year x 5 years = 11% overall raise, and get rid of all the helpers…ask for more volunteers. Two, 1% per year x 5 = 5% annual raise, get rid of half the helpers… At the rate Charter schools are being funded, though, this argument won’t matter much in another few years, all the public schools will be out of business, charters taking over the facilities. They wanted to only give raises to the 20% ‘best’ teachers until the principals said it couldn’t be done fairly, nor without creating chaos in the teacher ranks. ---
