This is not a stupid idea but some really stupid Republicans. (Hey, they work for Fox News, so I don’t think that’s a stretch.) The panel on some Fox Business show was discussing Seattle changing the name of Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day. They were highly offended because this is disparaging Italians somehow. But the kicker was the end of the segment. One of the women said “By the way, how did the indigenous people get here if it weren’t for Columbus making four trips back and forth?”. I assume the whole thing about ‘Christopher Columbus didn’t look like this’ and that Italians were losing their holiday was tongue-in-cheek, and I can even go along with Niger what’s his face making some good points - no need to knock Columbus to recognize the indigenous people. What Columbus did was important. But she really said, “how did the indigenous people get here?”! and there’s no fucking way that was a joke! Holy shit! ---

WOW. See when people are that lame-brained, there is just no hope for reasonable discourse. So she thinks 4 trips by Columbus brought all the native Americans here?!?! I can’t even wrap my mind around the thought process that led to that conclusion. ---

FWIW, I’ve also seen right-wing folks responding to whimsical or derisive left-wing lampooning of the “TOUGH ON LATINO IMMIGRATION” Republican meme with Native American images or references with two tacs, either : - claiming the natives didn’t have no laws against it therefore it was perfectly justified _at the time_ to immigrate willy nilly and regardless of the locals’ wishes (which is its own kettle of fish) ; -alternatively confidently stating that since both groups “invaded America at the same time” it was simply a matter of who was stronger rather than who had a moral or legal pedestal from which to stand from. Yeah. I blame home schooling because seriously what’s up with that shit, America ? ---

If there should be a complain to the name change I do think that excluding Columbus is not being inclusive, but on the other hand having the name of a foreign conqueror in an American holiday (a conqueror from from a continent whom we got independence centuries ago) sounds really silly to me. ---

Pun on _mujeres_. Don’t know why, but the phrase “How sad, the women are in the kitchen” is terrifically funny for people who don’t know where the train station is. Or the library. Oddly enough, Russians with a very limited vocabulary don’t know where they are, either. However, the friend they introduce is Boris Sokoloff. Which is sad. ---
