The poster I was replying to obviously does but I wasn’t agreeing with them just assuming their premise was correct so I could show the flaw in their thinking. I guess I could have prefaced the whole thing with “even if” but that would have just given them something to latch onto and ignore the fact that they had just made a silly statement.

It was a silly statement to say that something you have admitted happened in 1972 first happened in 2008. 2008 is AFTER 1972 as most humans live history so how could something that happened in 1972 have happened first in 2008?
Now, I don’t care if the underlying premise ( why anyone got elected in the first place )is incorrect or not as the person I was responding to accepted that as a fact and whether or not it’s actually a fact, doesn’t change the fact that it couldn’t happen in 1972 and still happen for the first time in 2008.
Just made a long edit that took longer than 5 minutes but got lost when I tried to make a new post of it. Here it is again.
Ok, Ford wasn’t elected so the comparison is off and I can’t use that against Jimmy but the Ford scenario is valid because he lost the election to Jimmy Carter who was primarily elected because he wasn’t a republican. It was a dark time for republicans. It wasn’t primarily about his ideas but who he was not.
Now, I don’t know if that was the first election won by being “not the other guy” or not but it happened in my lifetime and it clearly happened before 2008 and Jimmy acknowledges that he can remember before that election so it happened in his lifetime too.
All of this assuming that this is why Obama won which I’m giving Jimmy because that’s not an argument I have time to make/support.

Ask them if they have to wait a year, or if they’ll die before they an angiogram or if they’ll die before they get a cancer screening right now at this very moment. Because, if they don’t now, they won’t then since single payer is NOT what is being proposed. The healthcare bill that is being discussed will let you keep the insurance you have now if you so choose. SIMPLE.
These people think that they won’t have to wait a year for an angiogram and they’d be right. But see how long it takes their insurance to pay. THIS IS HAPPENING NOW.
Oh and I don’t know how it is in your part of the country but I have private health insurance provided to me by my employer and I have to wait 3 months for a mammogram. I had to wait 6 months— 6 motherfucking months before I could get a consult with an endocronologist.
Things are as bad as all the anti-reformist think things will be at this very moment.
