I applied to get into university, in Australia, under the same criteria as everyone else. However, as an NZ Citizen I wasn’t eligible for the CPI-increase only student loans and had to pay, up-front for my studies - which meant studying and working at the same time. In the end I had to put my studies on hold for some time, but I was fortunate that after obtaining Australian citizenship I could access the Commonwealth student loans so I could complete my studies. In my final year of uni there were (IIRC) half a dozen white people in my class; most of the others were overseas students. There were also several Pacific Islander and Aboriginal students there too. I’ve met plenty of Indigenous journalists. They do some outstanding work on issues affecting both their communities and the wider population. Being Aboriginal isn’t likely to help you get a job at one of the metro commerical TV stations, but there’s plenty of places - the ABC, SBS, community newspapers etc - where it would either be an advantage or not a factor at all. I don’t presume to lecture you about the situation in New Zealand media because I haven’t worked with it in many, many years; I’ll thank you not to try and tell me the state of affairs over here in the Australian industry - especially just because I’m not saying what you want to hear. ---

This is the Pit, where we come take out our anger at other posters. The entire point of this thread was to attack “SJWs” and make fun of them in the exact way you are now trying to claim is wrong. And stealing someone else’s recipe is not cultural appropriation, and stopping them is not a matter of social justice. That said, even if it were, still nothing bad happened here. People have the right to try and get other people to boycott a business. It’s freedom of speech. If the people who hear the argument think it’s good, and choose to boycott, they have that right. This still just boils down to “people value something I don’t value, so I’m gonna call them names.” You know, the thing you said you shouldn’t do. ---

The mistake they made here was the way they boasted about getting techniques through browbeating and spying on poor people who didn’t want to give it to them. Had they kept their glee at putting one over on people less privileged under their hats they would likely have done just fine. But their apparent disrespect for those people and their boasting about exploiting them was too much. ---

I’d ask you how you define the term, but I worry you might think I’m browbeating you. Also, where did you get the notion that these ladies were expressing “glee at putting one over on them”? That seems to be an almost comically uncharitable interpretation of their motives. Tell me, when you picture these two women, are they twirling fake moustaches and kicking puppies as well? As for exploiting…well, it would be no less than a miracle of commerce if a taco truck in Portland Oregon managed to siphon away any customers from a taco truck in Paulo Nuevo, Mexico.
