One of the first things young women learn if they want to survive is that street crime can happen anywhere from Rodeo Drive to Skid Row.

I’m pretty sure I made it clear that I DON’T expect them to do anything.

Why would you compare fatalities to assaults?

Again, I don’t think they should change their behavior. Not sure how I can make it any clearer for you.

In some few cases, some small amount of action on your part could help to avoid causing anxiety of fear on someone else’s

But somehow you don’t mean this:

Hey Arab guy! You should stay in the house because your actions are affecting others in a negative way. You should take some small steps to avoid that.

Hey woman! Your clothing is affecting others in a negative way. You should probably cover up yourself. It’s only a small thing.

Hey breastfeeder! You are affecting others negatively. You should probably cover yourself or feed your baby out of the public eye. You don’t want to negatively affect people, right?

Hey black guy! Your actions are affecting others negatively. You can just go to the restaurant across the way. It’s just a small step to avoid causing anxiety or fear on someone else.

You only mean this:

Hey man! Your actions are affecting others negatively. Cross the street to avoid causing anxiety or fear on someone else.

Yet you don’t see the similarities.

Yes, just like for woman to suggest that men should be careful not to spook the women folk. Rude and sexist.

Yes, but you want to unintentional offender (here, it is black people) to do something in order to alleviate discomfort of someone else.

You not posting on this message board anymore would greatly alleviate the discomfort I feel reading your words. Therefore, by your own admission, you should stop posting here in order to alleviate my suffering.

Or you could admit that some people have fears, be it rational or irrational, based on confirmation bias, past traumatic experience, or too much news watching. And those fears should not result in entire groups of people (men, minorities) having to change their ways in order to accommodate them.

How about we get on topic. I feel like crossing the street has been exhausted. Also really, “current sjw nonsense” seems to have been exhausted, so I’m going to dip into the past cause I only just heard about it.

I guess six months ago the UN appointed Wonder Woman as an honorary ambassador to the UN as representative of some kind of girl empowerment movement. All good so far.

But then feminists gathered 49,000 signatures to remove Wonder Woman because she is “a white, big breasted woman with impossible proportions”

The UN did what it is good at and capitulated. Good lord.

Feminists of six months ago…don’t focus on say “The Rape of Cologne”…focus on Wonder Woman and how she’s not fit because she’s a big breasted white woman

You aren’t even arguing she did anything wrong. A person cannot violate their own freedoms, so you are clearly assuming the woman is being coerced by someone else. And that person would be the one you are arguing is doing something wrong.

If I choose to, say, not insult you in the Pit, have I done anything wrong? Because I choose to do something to accommodate you, am I doing anything wrong? Am I impacting the freedom of myself or anyone else? Of course not.

No one is saying that men have to avoid crossing women on the street, or that women have to wear modest clothing. We’re saying they have the right to choose to do so. And the person involved has every right to thank them for doing it.

That’s not to say there aren’t lines. But you are nowhere near them in these examples. For the modesty one: Nudity is often (but not always) illegal, and crosses the line for polite society in many situations. And you cannot make intentional physical contact with another person without their permission. Walking beside them, or wearing a lowcut outfit is nowhere near the line.

And, what I’m saying is that you don’t know this. Of course, from his point of view, he didn’t say anything racist, and so that’s what he’s going to tell us. And that’s just assuming he’s not intentionally leaving things out, which often happens.

I mean, at least twice he’s read one thing we’ve said, in this very thread, and changed it to something different. I specifically said that the woman wasn’t obligated to be modest, but he immediately, in response to me, talks about it as if I called it an obligation.

I don’t disagree that calling someone racist or sexist without explaining isn’t helpful. But I don’t agree with assuming Darren Garrison said nothing remotely racist or sexist. At most I can argue that he may not have.

Because people calling people sexist or racist for no reason is just extremely uncommon. It’s the “SJW” myth.

Though I lambast Americans for living in their bubble and not considering the rest of the world…I have to admit I don’t have a firm enough grasp on the Brit education system to comment. Now if it was an American professor who said “women don’t excel at getting first rate degrees because they feel intimidated by a male dominated field…”

I’d have some definite opinions. Not the least is that sounds incredibly sexist against women.

Hold on…for NO reason, I agree. For “a good enough reason”??

Well there’s the rub right? Man we could start a thread that would last years as to what constitutes that.

Personally one is going to have to show me a good GD reason before I call them racist. And wearing a Trump hat isn’t enough. Being a Pub at a “anti sharia rally” isn’t enough. I’m going to default to “dumb larper who had nothing to do” before I say racist.

And I understand my bar is going to be at a much different level than a lot of people. You can say to me that “the larper is tacitly supporting racism just by standing with actual vile people”…and that’s a valid argument.

But I posit that there are plenty of “SJWs” that most people at SDMB would consider not having a good enough reason to hurl the racist label. I see a lot of them on YT. IMHO

I’m on my phone sorry I can’t link

Giving in to something that really wouldn’t be your first choice because there is cultural/peer pressure on you and you would be looked down on if you didn’t is a form of cultural obligation.

A racist is an objective thing, and it is only vile because society feels that treating people as though they are lesser due to their genetic heritage to be a vile thing.

If you find yourself having enough in common with a racist that you yourself find yourself being accused of being a racist, then simply saying “No, I am not” is a poor response. It is defensive, and can only shut down the conversation as you now go on the defensive to explain why your perceived lesser treatment of others due to their genetic heritage is not racist, derailing any other productive conversation that may have transpired.

Trying to determine what characteristics or actions you are exhibiting to make others make that judgement about your actions would be a beneficial response, if what you are desiring is to act less like a racist. This can lead to a productive conversation, in which you find out how what you were doing could be perceived as treating someone as though they were lesser due to their genetic heritage. You may learn how to be perceived as less racist, or your accuser may learn that your actions are not racist, or even both!
The other option is to own up to it.

“You’re a racist!”

“Yes I am, because I feel as though it is appropriate to treat others as lessers due to their genetic heritage.”

I would think fairly poorly upon the second person in the last exchange, but at least it was honest and I know where they stand.
Now, sure, there are those who perceive any slight against a person of any ethnicity as racism, even if it really isn’t, but that is a chance to have a teachable moment with them, or you can just shut down and be defensive.
