> About those “closed-cycle” diesel-electric subs (which the Swedes and Australians are building): how long can they stay underwater? Are they just coastal patrol boats, or can they undertake “blue water”;ong-duration missions?

[Kockums](http://www.kockums.se/) makes submarines with Stirling engines. Their site has some descriptions on how stirling engines work and details on the subs.

The submerged endurance for the [Gotland Submarine](http://www.kockums.se/Submarines/gotland.html) is weeks according to the specs at the bottom of the page.

Apparently it is also pretty darn quiet. The US Navy wants to rent one for a year to practice against it. [cite (in Swedish though)](http://www.dn.se/DNet/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=145&a=324422)

Kockums also makes the [Visby class ships](http://www.kockums.se/SurfaceVessels/visby.html) that are stealthy. Kinda neat ships.
