Just a heads-up to the folks who use Tapatalk to browse the SDMB – it looks like with the latest update, Tapatalk is now showing ads (even if you have a paid SDMB membership). If you want to get rid of the ads then apparently you have to upgrade to a “VIP” version of Tapatalk. :mad: ---

I noticed that. I wasn’t sure at first if they were coming from the SDMB or from Tapatalk. I was annoyed because I have a paid subscription to the SDMB. I guess we really can’t complain. The folks at Tapatalk need to make a living. ---

Tapatalk is a separate entity from the SDMB. We have no control over their advertising or anything else that they do. If we detect that you are running a device that has a Tapatalk app available, we’ll display a one-time popup letting you know of its existence. Other than that, we have nothing to do with Tapatalk. I doubt that they are even aware if you have a paid membership here or not. If they are serving up ads now, I would expect them to give you ads regardless of your membership here. ---

I know that Tapatalk and Straight Dope are not related in any way, but I know that lots of folks (including myself) read the SDMB on Tapatalk, and lots of Tapatalk related questions wind up here. I guess my biggest concern is the safety of the ads. I know that people have gotten infected with viruses and malware from SDMB ads, so seeing ads start popping up in Tapatalk was a little disconcerting. ---

I assumed it didn’t have anything to do with the SDMB. ---

It’s $15 for a lifetime VIP account with Tapatalk, for what it’s worth. No ads and you get free image hosting. Pretty awesome deal if you use it every day or even just once a week or something. I bought VIP a while ago when they started showing ads (you guys haven’t seen them? Weird lol) and I feel good about the purchase. It works out to 4 cents a day for a year then free for life after that. ---

I paid for an earlier edition of the Tapatalk app. One day they stripped the functionality, announced it was free now, and launched a new paid version of their app. Then they discontinued the free version. Something to keep in mind before you give money to that company. ---

Unfortunately, it’s as if you were advertising sterile hospital gowns for sale and giving options A, B and C for shipping…and option B shipped your gowns wrapped in used toilet paper. If it were my product I would do my best to make sure that shipping option B wasn’t available any more. ---
