Awards season is upon us. The Golden Globes are Monday, the Oscars are fast approaching, the Emmys will be here soon. So here are my own personal awards for … Best Super Hero Names! The X-Men Trophy (for one-word names, excluding “the”) 3) Storm. Simple and classic. 2) Galactus. Powerful and unforgettable. 1. The Flash. Memorable and perfectly sums up the character and his powers. The Legion Award (for meritorious use of “boy,” “lad” and similar nouns) 3) Altar Boy. Real term becomes a very appropriate sidekick name. Bravo. 2) Lightning Lad. Excellent alliteration. 1. Elastic Lad. Even better, more creative alliteration. The Ulu Vakk Memorial Cup (for use of color) 3) Deep Blue. A nice departure from the usual color-noun combo. 2) Silver Agent. Clever pun and nod to the fanboys in us all. 1. Green Lantern. ‘Nuff said. The Homo Sapien Trophy (for use of “man” and “woman”) 3) Hitman. Another real term used for good effect. 2) Man-Bat. Recipe for success: take a classic name and twist it appropriately for a new character. 1. Iron Man. Sure, it’s just \_\_\_\_\_-Man like a million others, but it hits the target perfectly. The Freddy Mercury Trophy (for use of royal titles) 3) Baron Zemo. Just sounds dangerous. 2) Calorie Queen. So silly it’s perfect. 1. Kingpin. Suggests both power and deviousness. Plus extra points for use of a real term. Please add your own categories and winners – humor, alliteration, military titles, whatever. Or, just gripe about mine! ---

The Militant Hero Award (for the use of a military title) 1. Captain America (it just gushes patriotism) 2. Commander Steel (Just for originality) 3. Major Disaster (because it’s so obvious) ---

Bizarro- So good, it spread to use outside the comic. Bizarro-X or “Bizarro World” now are widely understood to indicate something that’s the opposite or twisted twin of the original. ---

The Professional Title award, for best use of such a title in the name : 1 : Doctor Doom : Alliterative, and evocative of what he’s like. Plus, it’s great for story titles and evil speeches. “You cannot defeat _DOOM ! !_” 2 : Professor X : Comes right from his name and title, and the X makes for a cool symbol. 3 : Dr Pym : Because he _is_ ! ---

Can I vote for myself? In City of Heroes my friend and I made 2 roman gladiator type characters. Their names were against the game’s policies and we had to change them eventually. But for a good week there, you could quest with the mighty warriors: Cockus Maximus, and his understudy Testiclees! Yeah, I know, we are immature. We giggled like school girls the entire time we were playing. 😃 ---
