Even this Seppo knows who Don Bradman was.
No, not Don Bradman as the almost-forgotten cricketer, it was Chuck Fleetwood-Smith who was almost forgotten. I could have phrased that better…
He went 11-25 with a TD & 2 INTs. It wasn’t terrible, but the Dolphins were down 24-0 in a blink. He was also pulled in the second half, which also seemed to add to the insult. I’m a Jets fan and spent years hating Marino, but I remember feeling bad for him during that game.
No, Yaz retired in 1983, five years later.
He was credited with an error in Game 1, per the box score.
In my fuzzy memory, I recall all-pro football player Howie Long playing maybe the worst game of his career on his last game. I do remember the guys calling the game on tv felt bad for him.
Hall of Fame QB Y.A. Tittle’s final game, in December 1964, was nothing to write home about. Playing just the first half he was intercepted twice, one of which was run back for a TD, as Cleveland routed Tittle’s New York Giants, 52-20. Cleveland led at the half 24-7.
This is the one I was going to say. I was at the game and he was horrible. His last pitch was a grand slam HR to Dan Howitt.
Yes, Zidane’s long-term infamy for the headbutt was definitely mitigated by Italy being the opponent. The collective soccer world has been wanting to headbutt Italy for decades, most fan reactions to Zidane that I’ve seen have been “Damn straight!”
He also lost a couple of balls in the sun in Game 2, although as usual in such cases he wasn’t charged with an error. (After losing one of the balls he compounded the embarrassment by falling down.) Of course this was under the high daytime sky in Oakland, which can give any outfielder fits. And he did drive in the lead run in extra innings, so on the whole it wasn’t that bad of a game or series.
I’m not dissing Willie Mays in any way, (like anybody could) but if memory serves the go-ahead RBI single WAS a twelve-bounce ground ball that just squeaked through the center of the infield.
It wasn’t a dying quail like Luis Gonzalez’s in game 7, 2001, and it did the job, but impressive, it wasn’t.
I have a feeling every game from here on out has the potential to be Ladanian Tomlinson’s worst last gasp.
