That’s why I wrote “officially”. If they are prevaricating, it seems silly when the issue is out in the open. But people often lie for silly reasons, or for no reason at all.

I only caught a bit of the episode, but didn’t J’onn say that Winn would be working on a non-lethal alternative for the agents to carry? Assuming he creates one that works (this is a comic-book world, after all) I don’t see why anyone should have a problem with it. Law enforcement officers carry weapons for self defense and for the defense of others. If there really was a non-lethal means of accomplishing those objectives, I’d expect it to become standard issue in place of firearms.

I hear both of those—but most of all I hear overlaid this breathy Jackie Kennedy-style phonation (breathiness: increasing the space between the vocal folds so that more air passes through along with the voice. It’s the opposite extreme from creaky voice a.k.a. “fry.”)

Watching some interviews with Amy Jackson, that breathiness seems to be her normal voice timbre:

I see that she’s from Liverpool. What I perceived to be a slight Indian intonation might actually be just normal Liverpudlian. It is way, way toned down for the American audience.

This subplot had less subtlety than an 80s Afterschool Special. I actually cringed at some of the lines. I felt bad for the actor playing J’onn having to speak them.

I agree.

And like two episodes earlier, there was that subplot about how Guardian was harrassed by the police when he was seven years old. I believe in Black Lives Matter, that there’s different standards of justice for black and white people, etc. Ok? I’m not about to complain about the message. The hamfisted, unsubtle and poorly delivered way they handled it though? That, I’m complaining about.

I don’t want Supergirl to become the “relevant social justice issue of the day” show but if it _must_ be (and it really musn’t) at least do it well.

I am _really_ hating this season of Supergirl. The Reign thing is boring, the stupid trust thing between Lena and Supergirl sucks (how refrshing it would have been to have Lena say something like “You fucked up bigtime S-girl and it’ll take a while to regain my trust, but we’re friends so I can forgive you, just give me some time”)

Oh well–Arrow had a far worse season about 3 seasons back and rebounded, Flash had the interminabley slooooow Savitar plot and came back strong this sesason and after Season1 when Legends was the Kendra and Katar show, it’s becoming my favorite, so maybe Supergirl will improve.

_Arrow_ had a gun control episode last season that was better. It wasn’t perfect by any means, but it was not so stupidly ham-fisted. I hoping they’d do more episodes like that, since Oliver Queen is (was) mayor, but they had to go back to Oliver being an ass to everybody.

_The Flash_ also kind of fell apart this season. After Devoe had absorbed all the metas and Marlize left him, you’d think that it was about time to wrap it up. But they had to stretch that out for 2-3 more episodes.

I agree about _Legends_. It’s the only show that got stronger and crazier after this season’s hiatus.

For fans of Melissa Benoist (you must be if you watch this show), she is currently on Broadway for a short run in _Beautiful: The Carole King Musical_ as the title character. There will of course be singing:

> One thing I really hope they address, but I know they probably won’t: Earth’s yellow sun. Specifically, the effect it has on Kryptonians. One did comment on how it was so awesome that Kara could fly on Earth, but surely there’s a bunch of displaced Kryptonians thinking, “Why are we struggling here on this floating rock, when we could be gods on Earth?”

I’ll bet the explanation goes something like this:

SUPERGIRL: “You know, if you move this rock near a yellow sun – it doesn’t have to be Earth’s yellow sun, it can be Alpha Centauri A if you’d prefer – the entire population will get super powers.”

KRYPTONIANS: “The havoc that would be wreaked by all that super strength running around loose would tear our civilization apart within a generation.”

SUPERGIRL: “But it also makes you immune to diseases and lengthens your lifespan! Surely, brief exposures to limited doses of artificial Yellow Solar Radiation would benefit your society immeasurably!”

KRYPTONIANS: “Um … hey look, over there, it’s Darkseid!” \<ducks and runs\>

For a top secret government agency, whose existence is on a need-to-know basis, the DEO has abominably lax security. They let a civilian with no security clearance, related to known criminals and terrorists, into the secret labs. They also leave blood from dangerous aliens just lying about out in the open. Oh, yeah, they’ve also given up all lethal weaponry without first developing a viable alternative. Great job there, J’onn.

This late in the season, the writers are still trying to bring all the plot threads together. J’onn and his father. Kara and her mother. Kara and Mon-el. Alex and her wanting a child. Sam and Reign. And they had to shoehorn Jimmy Olsen in there somewhere. It’s like they only now realized that they had to wrap things up real soon.

At least that cultist guy finally got his comeuppance. What was he thinking was going to happen, anyway?

I don’t think the Kryptonite gun qualifies as non-lethal (and any electrical-web-thrower that knocks down Kryptonians is probably lethal to humans, too). Winn’s shield wasn’t perfect, but until this week, the DEO didn’t have anything that would have held up to a Kryptonian heat ray at all, so actually, they’re making some improvements.

Agree about DEO security, but that’s been an ongoing issue from day 1 (or at least since they decided to give top clearance to a newspaper’s IT guy (who is the son of a mass murderer) and put him in charge of tech development).

Yeah but the other poor agents were trying to hit the Kryptonians with sticks. Didn’t work out too well for them. Not that the guns they gave up would have made much difference, I guess.

The DEO’s security is on par than the Star Labs security on Earth-1 i.e. non-existent. They’ve lampshaded it on _Flash_, but there’s a lot less excuse for a paramilitary organization than a laboratory…

God, I hate this season. Just! Kill! Whatshername (Sam? Reign) already, let Alex adopt Ruby and stop with the Worldkiller plot.

Also, save Martian Manhunter’s daddy. He can out-act any three other people on the show (and despite my problem with this season, most of the cast is pretty good).

Finally, how exactly did J’onn get government approval to ditch the guns? The DEO is a teeny-tiny branch of (probably) the Office of Homeland Security. J’onn is way down on the totem pole. So how’s he making policy decisions like this? You’d think the head of the DHS would like to discuss this kind of radical change.

The actress who plays Lena, Katie McGrath, is Irish, and has a noticeable accent. It’s possible that “nuke-you-lar” is a consequence of her needing to mimic an American accent. I’ve certainly heard Americans pronounce it that way, although not all do.
