Superheroes and heroines versus ordinary thugs!

Another scene that comes to mind involves the golden-age version of the Atom. (I read this in reprint form.) In this adventure, the Atom manages to stop a train using his vast super strength. Just a few panels later, he is KOed by a blow to the head by a blackjack-wielding thug! Another example of a powerful hero succumbing to a common criminal!

Fans of the old All-Star Squadron book in the early 80’s will recall that Robotman and Commander Steel, while both mechanical in different proportions, and thus inordinately strong, were in constant fear of a blow to the head that would KO their all-too-human-brains.

And Batman fights normal thugs. And often gets injured. Heck, even his abnormal thugs are usually just crazy, not superpowered.

In the current Justice League tv series, one of my favorite shows was the Christmas episode. Superman takes the Martian home with and Clark sneaks to the tree at night, picks up a present for himself, stares at it, and frustrated says ‘Lead’.
Pretty much my favroite bits from that show are when the heros are trying to do ordinary things like that.
Perhaps this is where the dreaded ‘if he’s prepared’ comes from. Unprepared he can be caught by suprise and taken down.
