Supermarket Names

There’s a small chain of small-ish grocery stores (hardly “supermarkets” but bigger and more full-range than a convenience store) in Chicago called Happy Foods. The food may be good, but I seriously doubt it’s happy.

Because I always go by wikipedia

Food Lion has it’s own website

But now you can update the wikipedia page.

There’s a Food Lion about a mile down the street from my new apartment. I do most of my shopping at Giant and that’s where I have a loyalty card, so I hadn’t gone there before. I tried it last week and was pretty disappointed. The interior was shabby and depressing, and the produce section was horrible. The only thing I really needed was a box of strawberries and I left without them because the selection was so poor and everything seemed about to go bad. And the prices weren’t any better than other stores. I went back to Giant the following day and gained new appreciation for a produce section that’s twice as big and not full of goods beginning to rot. Not going back to Food Lion, that’s for sure.

There’s the Food Clown in Faber, near Faber College.

I always assumed that somewhere in the history of CVS there had been three partners with those initials. But no, I checked and the chain was originally known as Consumer Value Stores and they just decided to shorten the name.

We have “No Frills” here but I call it “No Thrills”.

I’ve never seen a Food Lion IRL, but whenever I see the name I want to call it ‘Food Loin’.

There are stores called Super Valu. I always pronounce it ‘Super vuh-LOO.’

I haven’t seen an Alpha Beta in a while (apparently they haven’t existed in 20 years), but I liked to call them Alpha Beta Gamma Delta.

I hear it as “John Iggle” from my years in Youngstown.

There is a small market in central NJ called ‘Grab and Go’. I’ve always wondered if they had a shoplifting problem. :stuck_out_tongue:

And then there’s Kings, which is not only whole paycheck, its a good part of the next one too… :smack:

Years ago, we had a store called Penn Fruit which eventually became A & P. Also a Valu Food. Northern Alabama also had Circle K (convenience store).

A&P is now using the name Superfresh

I went into the Whole Foods in Yorkville, the ritzy shopping district in Toronto. When I discovered the $6 loaves of bread, I thought, “Well, now I know where the rich people shop…”

In Southern Ontario, we used to have Food City stores, but I’m not sure whether they were the same as the US ones. We also had Dominion stores, A&P, and Safeway’s. All have been swallowed up in a wave of mergers and consolidations that left us with three large groups of food retailers: Loblaw Companies, the Jim Pattison Group, and Metro.

Each of these has many sub-brands, regional chains, and specialty stores, many aimed at different market segments. For example, Loblaw operates the vast Real Canadian Superstores that compete with WalMart, but also operates NoFrills for bargain shoppers, Zehrs in Southwestern Ontario, and Maxi in Québec.

After looking through the linked article, I realized that three of the food stores in Peterborough are associated with Loblaw’s: there is an Independent in the burbs, a NoFrills closer to downtown, and a Real Canadian Superstore at the mall…

Edit: make that four large groups… I forgot about Empire, the group that operates IGA and FreshCo…

There’s one close to me called Price Low Foods. There used to be a New Best Video store next to them.

I miss Winn Dixie - I always pronounced as WIYINNNNNN Dixie.

Down around New Orleans, we shopped in either Winn-Dixie (which is still in business), National, or Schwegmann’s (which aren’t).

We have Food Lions here too. In the Hampton Roads area, they’re commonplace. I personally prefer Farm Fresh. Walmart is another common choice for grocery shopping. Harris Teeter, when we can find one. Trader Joe’s, when we’re quite a distance from home.

I’m fond of the names No Frills (not even in the store name!) and Your Independent Grocer (considering it’s a chain…), both part of the Loblaw’s family.

I prefer to shop at the Metro, but their name isn’t overly interesting.

These names are great! The mental pictures they conjure up…there is a court, with the Fod King and food Queen sitting on thrones, ruling over Foodland. A safari park, with the Food Lion, Tiger, Iggle, Piggy Wiggy…

I heard on the radio that A & P (owner of Pathmark) is filing for bankruptcy again. In this area, the A & P’s all became Great American (their store brand was The Best Yet) but they are gone now, bought by Tops or the Price Chopper (I hate that name, it makes me think of false teeth). We have Hannafords (I think they started in Maine, which is a good sign).

When they had video rental stores, they were called Iggle Video.
