Supreme Court rules in favor of Westboro protests

Phelps is a Christian. I’ve watched a 2 hour BBC documentary about him and his family that make up the whole church of lunatics that he is leading.

It’s a very compromising issue for Christians. Here’s someone who claims what the Bible says it’s the right thing to do, and here we are, a whole nation of self-proclaimed Christians we don’t like what he says because it hurts our precious feelings… like being in an Oprah show and bitching about the world.

At least Phelps is consistent.

Long live lunacy.

Never mind.

Actually Jesus would almost certainly publically rebuke Phelps were He to come to Earth to-day.

He implied Phelps was an ultra-Republican who thought all non Republicans would go to Hell.

And in ancient history, he was a civil rights demonstrator. If you look actions since the WBC came to prominence - or just more recent than 1988 - you’d be hard pressed to describe him as a “firm Democrat.” It is true that he’s a member of the party and has run for state office several times as a Democrat, but by leaving out what he’s said and done in the last couple of decades you put this post firmly in the ‘half truth’ category.

You claim to know the mind of your god now?

According to the Bible, that’s a sin and you are eternally condemned to your religion’s hell.

As I said, at least Phelps is consistent.

I’m not a Christian and I hate this kind of bullshit argument. You’re using a fanatic to try to push more sensible people into an all-or-nothing position. Phelps’ interpretation of scripture is not more accurate than that of other Christians and the Bible does not have to be interpreted literally. Literalism is a pretty recent invention. Every religious believer picks and chooses. Phelps is no different and no more consistent.

Again I was just responding to the (implied) claim that Phelps was an ultra-con.

But one can repent from the sins, yet they offer only damnation not forgiveness and love.

Fair enough. He’s a social conservative but an apolitical nutball.

That’s quite true.

Which means Phelps can go to Paradise and also be true when saying a fallen soldier will go to hell because his living parents did not vote for a Republican hater who will stone homosexuals to death.

Lunacy is the key to religious beliefs.

Being saved or damned has nothing to do with being a Republican and Phelps picketed Jerry Falwell’s funeral for Gad’s sake. For that matter, show me in the Republican platform where the death of homosexuals is advocated. Are you Der Trihs: Reloaded or something?

What is up with Alito and free speech? Did the first amendment make fun of him in middle school or something?

He was also the lone dissenter in the case of videotaping animal torture.

The case on whether violent video games are protected by the first amendment is being decided by the Supreme Court. I wonder if Alito hates the first amendment so much that he’ll be the lone dissenter on that case as well?

I suppose he’s inspired by the precedent of European “progressives” who have banned all sorts of free speech including prosecuting Ake Green for comments against homosexuality.

Nice attempt to sidestep the issue.

Phelps is a Christian and he is following strict Bible Scripture and is telling everyone that they are going to Hell ( to other self-professed Christians) if they don’t treat homosexuals as the devil incarnate.

Phelps is consistent because that’s exactly what the Christian Bible is saying to do… exterminate homosexuals.

I want to see the reaction of self professed Christians that disagree with Phelps. According to their own Bible and Phelps they’re all going to Hell.

Tough to be a theist these days.

Not unless he also doesn’t eat shrimp and doesn’t wear polyester and treats the women in his life in ways most people would rather not and all those other rules atheists bring up to demonstrate what they feel are the silly parts of the Bible no one follows.

I rather suspect he doesn’t.

When Jesus came to this Earth He rescinded the civil and ceremonial aspects of the Old Testament Law thus the death penalty for homosexuals no longer apply.

[del]Please cite the Bible passage that instructs believers to exterminate homosexuals.[/del]

You know what, I’m going to back off this argument: it’s not the point. The point is that everybody picks and chooses, and the contention that Phelps is more “consistent” than a cafeteria Christian is ridiculous. (So is the idea that he’s calling some issue to their attention.) Phelps certainly isn’t very big on “love thy neighbor,” for starters.

Read Leviticus… and while you’re reading it, don’t eath shellfish on Tuesdays.

Perfect example: do you know Phelps’ views on shellfish or wearing poly blends? (I blanked on that passage, but I know what it says. I’m an atheist and I don’t give a crap.) Everybody picks and chooses what they want to follow and interprets it as they please. Some people are honest about it. Phelps isn’t one of them.

If you are an atheist then you are probably not very familiar with the Christian Bible.

Phelps is consistent with what the Christian Bible instructs people to do with sinners and infidels.

Phelps is right according to the Bible. It’s only the self serving ego-centric nature of human beings that want to proclaim themselves as religious while refuting the basic tenets of their own religion, something that Phelps is not willing to do, which makes him consistent.

Wrong, but consistent.

In short, Christian = gays will rot in hell. That’s what Phelps is saying and any Christian should agree with him.
