Supreme Court rules in favor of Westboro protests

She sounds like a member of the Tea Baggers.

Every religious believer picks and chooses? That verifies the statement that religion is self-absorbed invalid trash.

Which it is, I don’t disagree with you.

The utter hypocrisy is to watch the self proclaimed Christians claim their book is the word of their god but cherry-pick which parts they like and which they don’t.

As I’ve said before… religion is a mental disorder.

So what? I cherry pick all the time. What if told you I like the New Testament over the Old Testament? Or the Gospels over the rest of the New Testament?

Religion is a mental disorder?

What if I told you I liked my Physics textbook over my Biology textbook? You could only conclude that I am not a biology major.

What is truth?

There were several other threads relating to this question in the past few weeks.

Truth has to be universal, objective and irrefutable.

If you make a claim then you better be able to prove it otherwise our current level of intellectual ability will dismiss your claim as false and irrelevant.

Its the sticks and stone rule. With that said, you can sue someone for emotional distress without intent or even real negligence.

Because it is still kind of a dick move.

Can’t you still sue for harrassment?

The press is a special case, but then again so is religion.

I think Phelps falls into the same category as that nutjob that shot teh Arizona congresswoman. A nutjob first and foremost but with sympathies that resonate more with conservatives than progressives.

Its the same thing. You might as well put crosshairs on them on some internet page.

I just read the monarch notes. You could put it on a postcard.

Love the lord your God; and

Love your neighbor as yourself.

Rawls translated the second part into philosophical parlance with his original position arguments for justice.

And it would be relevant if Democrat and ultra-conservative were mutually exclusive.

I think it demonstrates that religion fills a need for a lot of people, and that the major religions of the world (and their scriptures) are thousands of years old. The need is still there, and while the scriptures haven’t changed, societies have, and for the better. So some of the ridiculousness gets overlooked and the “inconsistent” stuff that remains is an improvement.

I think you’re going off on a vitriolic tangent that has nothing to do with the thread topic, and I don’t think that using Fred Phelps to smear religious believers reflects poorly on religion.

They have, actually. That’s the putative purpose behind their protests: they’re upset that the US government refuses to put homosexuals to death, as (they claim) the Bible requires.

The equivalent of that would be advocating for the government to declare WBC’s particular form of douchebaggery a capital crime.

Not physically, but financially. If you eff with their money, it might do some good. With less money, they can’t afford their trips to go picket funerals, they can’t afford to send another one of their kids off to law school. All I know is, if I could take their money and get away with it, I would.

I realize the reasons for the SCOTUS ruling and overall I agree with it but it is hard sometimes. These assholes really push it…(this is from today, a new one WBC is after):

Long live religion!

They’re doing nothing wrong according to their religious book, that 75%+ of Americans believe in.

They are doing nothing wrong according to their interpretation of their religious book. An interpretation I do not think anyone else on the planet shares and an interpretation that would fail any formal challenge of logic and reading comprehension.

I’m no fan of religion but even most evangelical nut cases probably think these folks are nuts (just guessing but I have not seen other religious groups try to defend WBC actions).

Their book says that their book is the word of their god so no interpretation is necessary… actually any interpretation should be considered sinful and caused by Satan himself.

It is only secular morality that causes people to evaluate some religious beliefs as unacceptable… like stoning to death people that eat shrimp or stoning to death people that commit adultery.

Religion is a mental disorder. No part of it is healthy or agreeable with Nature.
