The people who are surprised seem to think the Supreme Court is just blatantly out to enforce right-wing outcomes, and that there could never be any legit or constitutional reason for them to make the rulings they do.
Uh, yeah?
I’d substitute “hasn’t recently” for “could never”, but other than that, yeah, you pretty well nailed the current Reactionary Wacko SCOTUS.
Also noting that Thomas apparently dissented for, like, fifty pages, so yeah.
Harlan Crow must have had a really strong opinion about this.
Must admit, interesting vibe here of “they have even taken away our ability to enjoy a win”.
Hispanics seem to be more conservative generally yet Republicans keep dumping on them like crazy. Makes no sense to me.
Hispanics voting Republican is basically voting for the Leopards Eating People’s Faces Party. Same for Log Cabin Republicans. (IIRC there was a famous case of this happening where a woman in Florida voted for Trump and then was shocked when her husband got deported.)
That’s because the values that Republicans claim to stand for really resonate in a cultural way. It’s too bad that’s not borne out by their actions.
Then again, they probably wouldn’t have those beliefs to begin with if it weren’t for white colonialism, so it really all goes back to the same source. ![]()
Hey, kinda hard to have a Hispanic ethnicity without European colonization!
But after 500 years I believe we get to, as is said these days, “own” our decisions.
But really esto es un hijack so back to your regularly scheduled pessimism.
Supreme Court? Never heard of them.
Alabama just decided that they don’t really need to listen to the Supreme Court. And by the time someone complains, files a lawsuit, and it works its way back up the chain we’ll be at least another election or two in.
I don’t come to this forum regularly so I didn’t see it when it was first posted. As I was reading it today for the first time I was thinking they would just change the map but still not comply. It only took until the end of the thread to prove me right.
More “Yes, but what if we don’t?” thinking.
Louisiana decided that this sounded like a fine idea to them and decided to ignore the Supreme Court ruling, as well.
Let me correct myself: Louisiana decided to fight and appeal (though I’m not sure to whom you’d appeal if you didn’t like what the Supreme Court has to say about something).
Which evokes the apocryphal Andrew Jackson quote, “John Marshall has made his decision now let him enforce it.”
The Alabama courts have thrown out the still-gerrymandered map that ignored the Supreme Court ruling to create another majority black voting district and has decided to appoint a special master to redraw the maps since the legislature refuses to follow the court order.

“We are deeply troubled that the State enacted a map that the State readily admits does not provide the remedy we said federal law requires,” the judges, two of whom were appointed by former President Donald Trump, wrote.
The judges ordered a special master to submit three proposed maps that would create a second Black-majority district by September 25.
The Supreme Court unanimously rejected Alabama’s attempt to use their non-compliant map for the 2024 election. I guess even the conservative justices couldn’t stomach such a blatant disregard for the Court’s decision.
Yeah, that one’s gonna hurt, and hopefully leave a mark.
I think the Supreme’s are well aware that what’s legal for Republicans is also legal for Democrats.
They pass a ruling that ends up giving Republicans one or two extra Congressional seats in a conservative southern states.
Then, in a year or two, some highly populated liberal states, like NY, California or Illinois come up with maps that flip 10+ traditionally Republican districts to Democratic ones. They don’t want to set that precedent.
From the article:
The AG is just following Kavanaugh’s instructions: “Times have changed since June! that was, like, months ago!”
