China hits a demographic wall pretty soon, one that is worse than the US one. And Xi is doing nothing to evolve the country into one that consumes more, possibly hitting a trap with low productivity investments. One scenario Goldman Sachs traced had Chinese GDP overtaking the US in 2035, but not growing exponentially apart from the US afterwards. That might have been true _before_ Trump; but post-Trump the US is going to enter such a rapid and permanent decline that it’s going to be out of the running in terms of international significance before too long. China just basically needs to avoid outright destruction to eclipse the US; not because of any virtue of theirs, but because America has chosen self destruction. ---
