Surprising second occupations of performers

Stewart was one of the interviewees in the landmark British WWII documentary The World at War, in which he talked about the experience of bombing Nazi Germany. He was identified on screen as “Brigadier General James Stewart.” If you didn’t recognize him, you wouldn’t have known that he was an actor.

We all know Pete Townshend as a musician, singer, songwriter and sometimes writer of prose, but few know that he had a regular job as an editor for years at Faber and Faber, London.

Pamela Stephenson, actress and comic (made famous by her work on British show Not The Nine O’Clock News), subsequently qualified as a clinical psychologist. Whilst psychology became her career, she still did occasional TV work - some psychology related, some not. She has also authored a number of books - again, some psychology related, some not (and notably including a biography of her husband, Billy Connolly).

Gwyneth Paltrow is not only an actress, but she is also a professional huckster and public idiot who has made millions selling women bad advice and questionable things to put in their nether regions.

So there’s that.

Noted cameo actor Stan Lee worked in comics.

Jaret Reddick, lead singer of Bowling For Soup, is also the voice of Charleston Entertainment Cheese:

Maybe that’s not terribly surprising.

Pamela Rooke, known at the time as Jordan, was very influential in defining the style and fashion of UK Punk Music during the 1970s. These days she works as a veterinarian nurse and a breeder of Burmese cats.

Former presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke was in a punk band in the mid 1990s.

The original drummer for Foreigner, Dennis Elliott, is a well-known (in that field) woodworker.

Ezra Koenig, the lead singer of Vampire Weekend, also created a Netflix animated series:

And was a four time Jeopardy! champ.

Anyone can graduate Harvard, but Jeopardy! champ? Much rarer.

I tried to make this clear on her Wikipedia page but it’s fiercely protected by someone who threatens to make false accusations of vandalism against you if you make changes unflattering to Paltrow

When she’s not out chasing diseases like Ebola, Pardis Sabeti, MD Ph.D. sings for a band called A Thousand Days.

Using her real name of Jackie Fuchs, just in case anyone want to search for her on J! Archive.

On last night’s Jeopardy!, there was a clue about The Runaways.

The 80s rap star Vanilla Ice now does home improvement shows on HGTV.

Actor Lee Marvin was handyman / janitor / stagehand at the Woodstock Playhouse in New York. One of the actors in a play couldn’t perform one night and Lee said “I’ve heard all the lines every night. I can do it.” and a star was born.

Both James Brown and Billy Joel were Golden Gloves boxers. You can tell with Joel, by the rather disheveled state of his nose.

Roosevelt “Rosey” Grier started out as a football player at Penn State and then was drafted in the NFL, but later drifted into acting. He worked security for Bobby Kennedy during the 1968 campaign (he wrestled the gun from Sirhan Sirhan), was ordained as a Protestant minister, and wrote several books, the most memorable arguably would be Needlepoint for Men.

Winchell’s daughter, April, has done voices for it seems like every cartoon made since 2010…

…and has made available online the absolutely worst records since 1950…

I need to start a thread celebrating her contributions to the study of crappy recordings. We Boomers were fans of irony long before Gen Xers discovered their toes.

He also sang “It’s alright to cry” on Free to be you and me.

Not the most beautiful voice, but does hit the key change admirably. And if Rosie says it’s alright to cry, who can possibly argue?
