# Surprisingly good food were expectations are low

There’s a place called Southern Kitchen, in some tiny little town in Virginia on Route 11; I just know it when I see it. Husband says the steaks, even the prime rib, are excellent. I love the seafood platter, which could feed about 3 people. We found it when there was a bad wreck on I-81 that closed the road, so we hit the side roads to get home because we were starving. We’ve gone back every year since.

And there is, unbelievably, an Applebee’s in Maryland that made the best crab cakes I’ve ever had – and that’s saying a lot, for Maryland! I’d never had a decent meal at any Applebee’s, but that one is fantastic.
