You can delete messages from both your Inbox and Sent Messages folders. Click the checkbox on the right side of the message, then go to the drop-down menu at the bottom right of the page and select Delete. Then hit “Go.” ---

Click on the Private Messages link below when it says you last posted. Click “Empty Folder” next to where it says “You have X messages stored, out of 250 allowed.” Click yes where it says “Are you sure?” Do this for your sent message folder, too. ETA: Damn ninjas! ---

Downloading to TXT. I’d go with CSV since I adore CSV (I lurves me my commas), but TXT is cool. ---

You could also not save your sent messages (if you are doing that) and just keep received messages. Keeping sent is the default, I think. You should free up some space that way. ---
