I’ve decided to pass on\*\* Survivor \*\* this season, and my reasons have nothing to do with the idea to racially segregate the tribes. My reasons have everything to do ith the premieres of seaon 2 of \*\*My name is Earl \*\* and \*\*The Office \*\* next week. ---

Ok, I watched Vanuatu half-heartedly (I think) and seriously considered not watching the next season, but did in fact watch Palau, and somewhat delibrately did not watch Guatamala. But being bored and lonely this evening, I watched and mostly enjoyed this episode. ---

What I’m wondering about Exile Island is that although there’s basically nothing on the island except that fake shipwreck and a few bushes, it looks like there’s another island with coconut palms within easy swimming distance, and possibly, if the water’s shallow enough, walkable to. So would someone exiled be able to walk over to it and get a few coconuts? ---

I thought I heard a mention of them being a city folk. The attempts that they showed were pretty lame. Maybe the producers figured that it might be the only decent thing to do, otherwise they would never get it. Cao Boi is my favorite, which means he’s gonna be voted out pretty soon. I thought they shouldn’t vote someone out in the first episode. Spend the first episode getting to know these people. It’s knowing these people, seeing them relate (argue/scheme) and rooting for/against them that is interesting to me. Leave the first elimination for episode 2 so we get to see more of them relating to each other. My idea for the next episode grouping: “Tribes” found in regular life. Or cultures if you will. A gay tribe. A deaf tribe. There are several subcultures in American life that could be used as a way to group people. ---

Okay, I enjoyed that entirely too much. Random thoughts on each tribe: WONDER BREAD: I hate hate hate alternative girl. She is the poster girl for “trying waaay to hard.” And I don’t like Exile boy either. Also trying too hard to be the wit. And what was up with that hat? Other than that, boooooring. PUMPERNICKEL: Could have possibly picked two more annoying black guys? Sheesh! You have Mr. Beautiful Spirit who is really a misogynist jerk, and you have Mr. Big Dominant Male, who is also a misogynist jerk. I was very glad to see him gone. Dumbass. They made the right decision getting rid of him. I’m really glad that Stephannie didn’t let her feelings of being left out of the Shundra/Rebecca friendship lead her to a stupid decision at tribal council. It must be hard feeling like a fifth wheel. Shubecca seem a little giggly but sweet. I suspect that they’ll become fast friends with Stephannie. RICE: I agree that Cao Boi is either going to be very cool or very annoying. I suspect annoying. He’s just too intense, and too quick to blame the others’ reactions to him on the fact that they were not born in Asia. But I did appreciate Brad’s and Yul’s reactions to him. They both seemed to think he was very weird, but were willing to give him credit where credit was due. We didn’t see much of the two women on this team–except for one whining about “no Asian jokes.” Why the hell not? TORTILLAS: Billy is definitely being cast as a villain. But really, what a dork. The pro volleyball dude is a snotty jerk. Ozzy is incredibly beautiful. He seems moderately cool at this point. We barely got to meet the women. Maybe that means they’ll be around for a while. Overall, nice job by the Tortillas on the challenge and on everything else. AND THE “BIG CHIEF STEREOTYPE” AWARDS FOR WEEK ONE GO TO: WONDER BREAD: Candy Woodcock (heh), for being the ultimate sorority-type bimbo. PUMPERNICKEL: Sekou, for being all talk and no action. RICE: Yul, for being kinda geeky. TORTILLAS: Billy, for making the inevitable “my parents came over on a raft” joke. Even though it was sort of funny. ---

Tribal Council gets you fire? Very lame. Exile Island isn’t that big, and the clue was rather straightforward. Rather than bithing and moaning, I would have spent the days hunting and the nights soundly stashed in the bow of the wreck. The WhiteBreads seem to be lacking some basic smarts here. Are they sandbagging, or are they really that stupid? Looks like an interesting season. ---

From the CBS website, Cao Boi was one of my favorites. But he annoyed the hell out of me on the show. My initial darkhorse favorite is the little scrappy guy on the hispanic tribe with the prominent armpit hair. That dude is gonna be a factor. ---

I didn’t know more than three people last season well into the fourth episode. I already know eight people in this cast, and it’s only the first episode. Racial segregation sure helps the memory. And it will also make it a breeze to remember who the original tribemates were after a shuffle. As to fire, I thought they always gave you fire at your first IC. ---

I remember a while back when only the losing tribe got fire the first night. It was something to keep everything even. You have to vote someone off, but you get fire. While the other team keeps everyone, but has to work out fire on their own. That was also back when, in the early goings, you kept the stronger people! ---

The contestants have learned that you don’t need to keep stronger people around if the show bails you out. And they pretty much have to bail you out, otherwise the episodes get boring. Loved the race angle. ---

What was the idol clue, again? ‘Make the top grade… [something]… When the southern island disappears… [something].’ Making an ‘A’ seemed reasonable. I didn’t see where the ‘southern island’ was, but it’s obviously to the south. I got the impression that making an ‘A’ in the masts would put the person in a position where an elevation change would put him in line-of-sight of where the idol is hidden. Unfortunately I didn’t record the show, so I can’t look at it again. ---
