Edit: I meant to quote the guy(s)/gal(s) who called it a Darwin An oil drum that when partially filled holds 160 gal, and has a vent eh? A tank not a drum, (42 US gal/barrel). Think a grain bin for oil. What they were doing was stupid, but it wasn’t Darwin in action, buildings can be reasonably expected to not explode. I would have expected any breeze to carry the vapours away from the tank very quickly. The only way I could call this a Darwin would be if they were sober\*, and tried to stuff their cigarrettes down the vent. \*I disagree with the creator of the Darwin Awards on this point. ---

Grrrr. :mad: When the linked article said “two teens”, my first image was of a couple of dimwitted 13 year-olds or something like like. No, at 17 and 19, they should know a tiny bit better. Two Darwin Awards. Damn shame about the dog, though. And, yes, it will be interesting to see whether any parent tries suing everything they can think of. :rolleyes: ---

Not playing around near flamable stuff with open flames is a pretty general rule, regardless of how safe it’s supposed to be. ---

Working oil fields look just like farmland, except there are little pump/tank/building compounds all over the place. They aren’t powder kegs waiting to explode. You aren’t supposed to smoke or light fires within the compounds but that is for roughly the same reason you are supposed to turn off your vehicle when fueling: prevent freak accidents. The soil isn’t so polluted that it will burn, and the buildings are not so delicate that one spark will set them off. Jumping on oil tanks is very stupid, but not obviously fatal. I would have expected the kids to crack their heads open long before blowing themselves up. I wonder if by jumping they meant dancing around the vent pipe. ---
