Sorry, no pix available on this one. But this is mundane, pointless and so very illustrative of the part of the world where I live. In the local newspaper recently I found an item about a benefit barrel race with proceeds to go to Relay for Life. Now, I participate in the annual Relay for Life as part of the team sponsored by my employer. And we do some pretty wacky stuff sometimes to raise funds. But this takes the cake: “The last event of the day will be the bikini barrel race. Spectators will be able to bid on the barrel racers and all the proceeds from this auction will be donated to the Relay For Life Foundation. The contestants will be swimsuit clad and will run for a $500 jackpot.” The original story (June 18) is no longer posted on the public web site; I just found it via my e-subscription. But [here](http://www.journal-advocate.com/news/2008/jun/24/neba-relay-life-fundraiser/) is a community calendar listing that verifies the story. Yup, bikini-clad cowgirls (and you \*know \* they will be wearing their hats) riding half-ton steeds at speeds of up to 30 miles per hour around a series of barrels in an arena. And you can bid on ‘em! Yee-haw, Cody, hold my beer, I’m puttin’ fifty bucks down on Becky Sue! I have no idea what one does with the bikini-clad cowgirl if one enters the winning bid. Maybe you get to watch her curry the horse. God, I love living in the country! ---

“Bikini barrel race” maintains a strong Youtube presence. Unsurprisingly. As does the Net in general; what’s unusual here is that it’s being done for a good fundraising cause, and not just to pump up attendance. I’ve been hurt by cattle and horses enough that I can only say that this is a very, very bad idea. You might be surprised to know that a bit of denim or a pair of boots protects you. ---

[/QUOTE] Oh, they’ll be wearing boots, all right. You can’t sit a horse properly without boots. I wonder if any of the swimsuits will be denim. Y’know, the more I think about this, I actually may go. This thing’s only about 60 miles from where I live, in the town I grew up in. It’d be worth a contribution to RFL just to get pictures.
