# Swine flu: it was 30 years ago today (2/6/76)

Anybody else remember swine flu? Memories of being vaccinated popped into my head for some reason today, and coincidentally it turns out that it was on this day in 1976 that the first American [died](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swine_flu). I remember my dad in particular being very concerned about getting my brother and me vaccinated. More people died from reactions to the vaccine than died from the flu itself. I wonder how much the swine flu debacle affected my current attitude toward getting the yearly flu shot and my utter lack of concern over bird flu.

I had it, as a boy.

Very high fever–the only time I actually hallucinated from a fever.

Chiming sounds, & small, elongated furry animal darting in corners. Feelings of insects on my skin.

Nasty.
