Synthetic oil

I change oil every 5k so I don’t have to write down the mileage. I think that in new cars nowadays, the engines are built to tighter tolerances than in the old days. Oil leaks much slower, with better seals and materials. A 6 year old Safari that was always on Mobil 1 with 150k still does not consume any oil between changes. I used M1 because the manual says so, the dealers use nothing but, and the extended warranty put the fear of god in me. Is this just a better engine, or is it M1? I don’t know. On the other hand, my 12 and 15 year old Blazers with 130k each leaks and burns oil, requiring 1 quart every 3k. The engines are obviously not as refined, and I feel it a waste to put expensive M1 in it since I am “changing” the oil as I go anyway. I know the above proves nothing, but obviously, M1 in the Safari did not hurt it one bit.

Try this link, it is VERY educational:

Educational is right! I’ve been using Fram filters for years and have not had any visible problems, but this kind of shit burns me up and convinces me anew that we ought to take all the advertising and marketing types and maroon them on some desert island somewhere where they can live out their days selling sand to each other!

That’s a fantastic idea, but would you mind terribly if I improved on it? We could also divide them up into two teams (we’ll call them “tribes” for marketing purposes), and have them compete with each other for resources, and in games. All the while, they are being taped for broadcast on radio. Boy… think of the money advertisers would pay to have their product associated with this innovative radio show. We could think about using TV instead of radio, but I don’t know how well that’d fly.
