where is serj (the lead singer) from, and what is his accent? i heard a live version of “chop suey” and his accent wasn’t son strong, so i’m wondering if he stresses, and, if so , WHY?? ---

They’re all from Aruba. I mean, Azbekistan. No, wait, it’s Armenia. They’re all Armenian. True. ---

According to [http://www.systemofadown.com](http://www.systemofadown.com) ,he is Armenian. Malakian, singer Serj Tankian, bassist Shavo Odadjian and drummer John Dolmayan, bonded quickly as friends but also shared Armenian ancestry and mutual disdain for perceived limitations. ---

Wait – are they actually Armenian, or are they from the US, but with Armenian ancestry? (Just like I’m from the US, but with Finnish and Italian ancestry, or like, say, Isaac Asimov was born in Russia and moved to the US at like 3 years of age, and is therefore thoroughly American…) ---

I remember reading somewhere that the guys were born in the Middle east…noteably, John in Beirut and moved to L.A. when he was 3 or 4, and they became friends growing up in a concentrated neighborhood of Armenian-Americans in L.A. or something like that… ---
