This is a really fascinating discussion, but I believe it might be better to have it in a separate thread. Someone else revived an [older thread on bringing back manufacturing jobs](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/bringing-back-manufacturing-jobs-why-would-this-not-work/676025/108) in GD, maybe that is appropriate? Or start a new thread?
