The neighborhood we lived in in Texas started going to hell in a handbasket a couple of years before we left; there was not just increasing theft and vandalism but lots of door-to-door scam artists, some robberies and peeping toms, and a couple of homicides. Being on the neighborhood mailing list made us aware of how bad it really was – as well as helped the neighborhood nail some scammers and at least one peeper. The mailing list was much, much more effective than the phone tree, even for breaking events like “The peeper just peeped at me and he’s running down the alley headed south! Everybody, try to get a good look at 'im!” ---

I was on the first block of East North Street, right by the big Chuch there. But then again, isn’t everywhere right by a big Church in Carlisle? Blondie’s was pretty much the only place I ever went out to drink. Crazy prices on huge steaks on Wednesday night, IIRC. ---
