I just got done reading that cretinous thread in the pit. First time I’d ever been to the pit. Probably last time I’ll go unless I’m requested there to help flame. And this is largely because I detest purposefully injuring other people. I will do so only when I don’t see an alternative. I would write more about this, but the thread in the pit is closed and thus I can’t. I will say this, though. I think the banner is absolutely lovely and I’d challenge anyone who disagrees to write a better one and use as much or less space. ---

I haven’t read the thread in the pit yet, I don’t know if I have the stomach for it. Liz, you are one of the most valued people on this board, you are nothing but an asset to us here. I hope you enjoy your rest, and time away, it does sound like you need it. Rest assured you will always be welcomed back with open arms by the majority of us here. Techie, I understand your need for a break, but don’t let those bastards get you down. You did nothing wrong. You went out of your way to do that beautiful banner on your own time when your life was already overburdened and hectic. You are generous to a fault - and don’t ever let anyone tell you otherwise. I only regret that the thread was closed before I got to it, because now I’m pissed - and it takes A LOT to get me pissed. Take your time, relax, and chill out. Did I miss something? What’s wrong with the banner? The banner’s great! Does it give people brain cancer or something? If not, then they should shut the fuck up! We all need to take breaks from the board. But please don’t go away too long techchick! ---

OK, I saw the Pit thread. Sigh. How long did it take to make the Wally banner? I see you charge $45/hr for graphics work, and $30/hr for technical? Do you have some sites you can point me to that feature your work? The reason I ask is that I manage a commercial web site (as one of my many jobs) that looks like crap, and if I can get additional funding from the clients I might be able to contract out some of the work to someone like you. The last guy who worked on it charged $500/day, and he sucked! ---

Eh, when I went and read the Pit thread, all I saw was two posters, short on sleep and grieving, who perhaps for that reason were less than tactful on a minor technical matter; one already stressed-out poster, also short on sleep and grieving, who didn’t like being second-guessed in her specialty; and one troll. Techchick, sweetie, ignore the troll, forgive the tactless, and get some rest. Then come back. You are one of those fearlessly honest people who are in short supply in this world, and on this MB. Please don’t go away and leave us alone in the dark with the sock puppets. ---

FYI, as far as I know no-one has objected to the banner ad’s content or intent. The complaints have been that the ad caused some disruption in the mouse pointer, causing it to hesitate and jump around. This happened with my computer, and I have and AMD K2-300 and a VOODOO 3-3000 video card. The solution, at least as far as IE5 goes, is to go to _Tools_, _Internet Options_, _Advanced_, and unclick _Play Animations_. There _was_ a problem with some computers, and there _is_ a solution. To techchick68- Please get a couple days rest before you make any decisions, o.k.? We’ve had too many downers recently, and we need you right now. 🙂 ---

I feel compelled to reply to you, Slythe. **First** of all, the initial _complaint_ had nothing whatsoever to do with pointer problems, it was about slow page loading time. **Second** of all, take a look at your very own word, _complaints_. That _anyone_ would _complain_ about a memorial banner is highly offensive to many of us here, in and of itself. **Third** , therein lies the biggest problem. The OP did not _ask_ if anyone was having the same problem loading the pages he was, nor did he ask if anyone could offer a solution. No. What they did was _complain_ about how it was screwing up his computer and then **criticize** the designer by stating that the banner was “made wrong.” And then they offered up their very own oh-so-knowledgeable solution that the Straight Dope should have them remove the animation from the banner (because it was the banner’s fault, you see). But even in light of the fact that the dink that posted that did so a)in the wrong forum, b)with little tact towards those who are mourning and c) with no tact towards the person who designed it, people **still** attempted in a polite and helpful manner to assist this mook with resolving the “problem” so that he wouldn’t experience such slow loading times. Which brings us to **fourth**. The putz in question, then didn’t bother to acknowledge the offers of assistance he was given by saying anything like, “thanks for the tips, I didn’t know I could turn animation off from my own browser,” or, “thanks, I don’t know if I have it cached, I’ll go check,” or simply, “thanks, I’ll give it a try.” No, he came back and basically flipped the bird to everybody who’d replied up to then. **THAT IS WHEN PEOPLE, OK, I, GOT ANGRY.** And if people can’t understand how and why that would upset techchick after everything she did for us here, then I simply don’t know what to say. What that person (and then handy) did was indefensible under the circumstances. I don’t blame techchick for having had enough. I’m not too far behind her, myself. ---
