I came across [Taking leftover beer home from a party. - In My Humble Opinion (IMHO) - Straight Dope Message Board](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=684973) which discusses the etiquitte on taking leftover food/drinks with you when you leave a party. I did not see any opinions about coming back to pick up leftover beer a few days later. What’s everyone’s thoughts on that?

Backstory:
Had a party at my house night before Thanksgiving at the bar in my basement. Checked the fridge in the morning and there was around 60 assorted beers left over including an unopened 30-pack I bought in case others ran out. I went down there last night to get a beer out of the fridge and the 30-pack as well as a half 18 pack were gone! Talked to the guy that left the 18 and he said it wasn’t him. I’m assuming one of the other people from the party came back and grabbed it, thinking it was theirs. Seems like a heads up to me that they were stopping by the house would have been nice. Kinda gives me a feeling of invaded privacy.

Beer that gets left at a party should be considered donated to the house. While I would give it back of someone came to collect it, I make no promises about there being any left to return.

I agree, just the fact that they didn’t even tell me is kind of rude imo

If it’s a 30 pack, It’s cheap swill and I would want to know how he got it by me in the first place.

I had big plans for that 30-pack of Natty Light!

Yeah. The basement has no lock, so anyone could get down there. Plus the key for my house hangs in the basement stairway. Everyone knows it’s there, but I usually get a text or something to let me know a friend stopped by for whatever reason.

The 18 was bud light and the 30 was busch. As far as it being cheap swill, it’s what everyone drinks around here. I buy around 120 beers for one of our mud bogs we all go to in the summer. No money for anything more expensive. No glass allowed anyways so that cuts down on the options.

Taking leftover beer without asking is low-class, but I usually “force” leftover beer and wine on my departing guests, since I don’t care that much for the cheaper stuff. I’d be a little miffed, but this is definitely a first-world problem. I’d just let it go and think about the important stuff in life.

I applaud your party acumen.🆒

Taking leftover beer is weird and rude, worse is the guy that brings Coors light (not even beer) and drinks the real beer all night and takes a few good bottles for the road.

Now, if the host says, “Take the leftovers” that is completely different.

And letting yourself in, sneaking over, swiping the beer, and sneaking back out is beyond the pale.

OP, apparently you can’t count on your party guests to respect basic manners. Improve your physical security or expect it to continue (or get worse).

I agree.

\*\*Any teens at the party? \*\*Sounds like something an underage drinker would do. My friends and I may have been that asinine at 16 or 17.

I was gonna say , Do you have teenagers in the house? Or maybe an alcoholic neighbor. Lock your door.

Not really unless that was the understanding up front.

It’s kind of a **no class** move to take the beer back. I’m assuming a situation where the host provided food and drink, it is not the move of an adult to take the beer back.

It’s mostly ok if you take your undrankened beers home with you as you leave the party. But to come back for them the next, or many, day(s) later is pretty much a dick move. Especially if you show up unannounced. Even more so if you sneak in and take it.

IMHO, it kinda depends. If everybody’s bringing pretty similar stuff, then I see it all as a contribution to the party.

But say I bring a six of Deschutes Black Butte Porter, which you never see in this part of the country, and I drink a couple bottles of it, but nobody else tries it. I’m taking the rest home, thankyewverymuch. 🙂

Damn straight to all this.
