Update: Just checked the reservation for the trip tomorrow…and it was accidentally cancelled! No coach seats available for the trip to LA, so I told My Beloved to make a leap and book a disabled room, which was available! Trip rebooked, and all meals provided. One hell of an accidental upgrade. 
Wow! That is more adventure than anyone needs. But better I suppose than showing up at the train station and discovering then and there that you have no reservation and they have no seats.
Any idea how the reservation got borked?
My Beloved thinks she might have done it accidentally while trying to put in my part of the reservation.
Huzzah! Do note that the accessible rooms are on the lower level of the train, so you’ll have to go upstairs to access the diner/café etc. as Amtrak’s fleet predates the ADA. Your car will have a dedicated attendant who’s on duty most of the day from 6 AM to 10 PM and can get you beverages, book your meal reservations, set up and take down the beds, etc., and there’s a call button in the room you can use to call them.
You’re DEFINITELY gonna want to bring a power strip. There’s only one outlet per room. You’ll also have access to a shower - it’s cramped and the water is lukewarm at best, but you can freshen up if you need to. Towels and soap are provided.
I discovered on my trip a few weeks ago, they now provide shampoo and conditioner as well. Like many hotels, Amtrak now has those bulk pumps of body wash, shampoo, and conditioner fastened to the shower wall. And they still have the regular bar soap.
If I remember right, they will deliver food to the room free of charge.
They definitely do for dinner, though it’s customary to tip the attendant. I suppose if you’re in an accessible room they may very well do so for the other meals as well. The attendant can fill you in.
There will be a menu card in the room when you board.
I understand Amtrak’s long-term plan is to replace the Superliners (which date to the '70s) with single-level cars that are fully ADA compliant, but I don’t know when that’s supposed to happen.
That’s sort of “interesting”, why would Amtrak get a pass on ADA compliance?
The Superliners are grandfathered in. Their replacement will have to be ADA-compliant. East of the Mississippi, Amrtrak uses single-level Viewliners because of lower tunnel clearances and are in compliance, but replacing the west coast fleet has been a long time coming.
Well, that’s my point. The ADA is pretty clear that’s not really a thing. Federal ADA law applies to all public accommodations, regardless of when they were built. I don’t have a dog in this hunt, just find it remarkable is all.
Not for trains- if built before 1990. And otherwise they need at least one car per train to be ADA complaint.
Well, once again, how did they get a pass on that? Just “interesting” is all.
The same way that the third-floor Airbnb built in 1891 that I often stay at in Seattle gets a pass on not having an elevator, I assume.
Every law has exceptions. It is not just Amtrak, other sectors have exemptions. Historic buildings, Churches, the Statue of Liberty, and others. The Railroads were not gonna scrap a bunch of rail cars, so the rules are new cars have to be compliant, and there must be one ADA car per train.
Right. They’re not running on 50-year-old equipment because they’re swimming in cash. Amtrak, like the Post Office, runs at a net loss and is kept afloat by state and federal subsidies because it’s a lifeline for rural communities and commuters (especially in the northeast corridor, but a lot of state/municipal light rail and commuter rail services also run with Amtrak equipment). The current plan to replace the Superliners has been in the works since 2017 and is supposedly going to hit the rails in 2032, but I’d take that timeframe with a grain of salt.
Went to the train station early and, well…life is an adventure. First off, they can’t check the baggage because the the second train from La to Anaheim doesn’t have checked baggage at all so it all has to be put on board with us.
Now for the fun part.
Remember when I said the the original all-coach reservation was somehow cancelled, so we had to redo it last minute and since there were no coach seats available we changed it to a private room. When we got to the station a few minutes ago they had both sets of reservations still active and tried to give us the all-coach instead of the room. Finally got that straightened out and the coach reservation was refunded and new tickets for the private room were printed up.
Yay!..so far.
We are in our room, the train has start rolling, and we are celebrating by noshing on Lay’s Squid Flavored Potato Chips.
I love those chips!

Are you going to give us a day by day travelogue? I sure hope so. You know how we are around here, we like details. Especially about food. And you may feel free to gossip about the other passengers, too. Some of us never go anywhere and have to enjoy junkets like this vicariously.
Well, we already figured out what to have for dinner. We are both having the coconut crusted shrimp for appetizers, then I am having the flat iron steak for dinner and My Beloved is having the pan roasted chicken breast. Ryder Estate Cabernet for me and Kendall-Jackson Chardonnay for her. Dessert will be white chocolate blueberry cobbler cheesecake.
Beats the hell out of the microwaved hotdog and Diet Coke I had the last time I rode the train.
