Taking Umbrage at the Homage to Fromage

so is it bedroom sewt or bedroom sweet ?

A bedroom sweet.

Is that the thing they leave on your pillow?

I say CULL-duh-sac

How about verisimilitude? English teachers probably have no fear of this word, but I stub my tongue on every syllable.

Victuals was a good example of a word that many people wouldn’t even recognize in print. Jed Clampett: “Well doggy Granny! These possum innards are good victuals.”

Here’s another one for **french frog ** to help us with: liaison

(slight hijack)

I hear that line every time I see the word “ribald”, including the original post about it in this thread.

(end hijack)

Cu d’ sac : French unprononciable U, no L. The ‘e’ of “de” is usually pronounced as ‘je’, even not pronounced at all: ‘cudsac’.
Btw, cul is a bad word, means butt, and is not to be used besides this word

Liaison : Lee - ay - zon (without saying the ‘n’, like…heuuuu… like King Kong without the ‘g’) in a streamlined way (leeayzon)

  • Chefguy, segue is a funny word for me because in the South French Provencal dialect it means to masturbate *

How do you say Non-pareil? (the little candy)

As for cheese try a French canadian thread

NON-puh-RELL

How do you say formidable?

Comfortable: this came up in my English teacher course in England. I had to repeat “KOMF-tra-bull” for my fascinated classmates and teacher. Apparently Cambridge would have us saying “KOM-furt-uh-ble” all the time.

Anglicized French words: man, that must be hard on your ears, french frog and other francophones ! “Roncesvalles” is my favourite, it’s a street in Toronto that we pronounce “RONCE-ess-vayles” - and Agincourt, a suburb that’s pronounced “AY-gin-court”, is a close second.

Despicable: my mom has always insisted it’s pronounced DES-pick-a-bul, contrary to popular wisdom. (But she was right about the onomatopea thing, and other obscure grammar and punctuation points, so I believe her.)

A friend always has trouble with “midwifery” (the subject another friend is studying, so it comes up sometimes).

Great thread title !

I say FORM and then mumble the rest, like FORM-mdd-dbll

I have started a poll which of course has totally confused my friends about the way they themselves pronounce “caramel”. Some say car-mel while myself say kar-a’-mel. Try it with your friends it is fun.
