Schick injector razor is really more of a man’s razor for the face. Darn shame they stopped making them. thank goodness for Ebay.
I tried a Weishi which was fine for a while but then went to crap. Gillette Slim is the best I’ve tried because it’s adjustable and has a butterfly opening. The only two other razors I know which also do are the Gillette Fatboy and the Merkur Vision.
The name Merkur comes up a lot.
I bought a vintage Gillette Super Speed on eBay, for under $15. I think it’s a 1954 model. Works great.
I’m using Feather brand blades now, very nice, got them in a sample pack. They seem to be pricier than other brands, but they do give a nice shave.
I also think you need to re-learn how to shave. You’re not going to have a pivoting head anymore, so expect a few more nicks until you get yourself acclimated. I had to change my technique slightly to avoid nicks in one area I didn’t used to get them.
I have a Merkur and I don’t like it very much. I use an old Gillette Tech double safety razor that I absolutely love.
I use Derby razor blades which I bought off of Amazon. They have 100 blades for $7.04 plus shipping. A razor blade lasts me a almost a week.
Do not use Feather blades at first. They are indeed quite sharp but also unforgiving. Not a beginner’s blade.
As you saw, a sampler pack is the way to go. Derby gives Addict a good shave but I found them horrible. Do make sure the pack has Astra and/or Personna and/or 7 O’Clock.
How do we feel about Edwin Jagger?
Perhaps I’m presuming too much, but are you interested in Edwin Jagger razors because they’re purty? If not, never mind. If so, you might want to only look at butterfly adjustable razors. As far as I know, Edwin Jagger doesn’t offer that.
I’m about two seconds away from ordering a Parker - rated 4.5 stars with 160 reviews.
Oooh, can you post a link when done?
Not adjustable, but it’s butterfly style, cheap, highly rated and really pretty.
My sweetie has used safety razors for years, got his dad using them as well, but I haven’t tried them on my legs yet. Will have to do so! I’m curious how they’ll work for underarms though…I think a cut there would kill me!
From Amazon: Merkur Model 180 Long Handled Safety Razor with Feather Razor Blades NEW Hi-stainless Double Edge blades.
As has been noted, Feather blades are wicked sharp. Be careful the first couple days. But overall, I wouldn’t go back.
Neat! If you could post back after you try it and let us know how it works, that would be very much appreciated
Absolutely!
Everyone in this thread has been so very helpful, special thanks to Michael E. Mouse for providing such detailed information. I really appreciate it!
Just curious… since razors stand a non-zero chance of becoming contaminated with blood, do you have to dispose of them in the same manner as medical sharps?

Remember to make the first pass with the grain. Expect to at least lather twice.
To join in as another male voice: I’ve been shaving my face with a Merkur 178 since 2009. Derby blades (I’ve tried others from a sampler, but like the Derbys best for being comfortable and sharp-but-not-too-sharp for two good shaves apiece). Badger brush lathering shave soap from Crabtree and Evelyn, which I like better than the Col Conk soap I started with. Finish with The Cool Fix aftershave gel, which is a little harsher than a far less alcoholic gel I’d been getting from The Body Shop that has since been discontinued, but is still quite excellent.
Not only is it obscenely cheap compared to cartridges, but the problems I had for years with sensitivity and razor burn were gone a few weeks after making the switch. I cannot recommend going to safety razors highly enough.
Brand of razor: no idea, I’ve had it for almost 40 years.
Brand of blades: whatever they have at the store when I need to buy some.
Shaving cream: I like Barbasol – very creamy, and not expensive.
I’m curious how easy/safe they are to shave the pubic area (female). I’ve cut myself using a normal two or three-bladed, so I use a men’s that has 5 blades, and have zero issues with those…
