[hijack] LifeonWry, can you tell me about having a tonsillectomy as an adult? My doctor has recommended (lightly) that I have one, and I want to know what it’s like – how long I’d be out for, etc. I especially want to know if there’s any throwing up involved, as I have a phobia. (Seriously. Yes, I know it’s stupid.) I think my email’s in my profile, if you don’t want to extend the hijack. Thanks! [/hijack]
stargazer, I had mine out just over 2 years ago (I was 23). It was pretty bad but I had complications that are not typical. I did throw up, but that was due to a bad reaction to different medications they gave me, not due to the surgery itself.
I was told to plan on taking a week off work, 2 at the most. Luckily I was not working at the time because I was out for almost a month. The first week severe pain, the second was like being very sick, the next 2 slow recovery.
here is a thread about adult tonsillectomies. Some people got over it much more quickly, but it is worse for adults than it is for children.
The search for this thread also answered my previous question about whether tonsils can grow back, and the answer seems to be yes, if they are not completely removed.
