A tangelo is a wondrous hybrid between a grapefruit and either a tangerine or mandarin orange.

Thirty-five years ago we were on a winter vacation in Death Valley. We were sitting outside at the Furnace Creek Inn (talk about truth in advertising!) and a woman at the next table shared a few “tangelos” with us.

These were some of the first to ever reach California. She was involved with the introduction of the commercial strains into the state.

Ah, yes, the most perfect citrus fruit–easy to peel, no seeds, juicy and sweet. I hunger for you, oh tangelo.
Kinda what I’m looking for in a man, too.

Tangelo horror story:

Tangelo craving reached a peak. I obtained said fruit with salivating mouth. Just before I peeled it, I noticed a small black spot at the base. It looked normal peeled, but when I broke it open, the entire inside was this awful corroded black mess. YUCK!

Put me off tangelos for a couple of days that one did…

Stock up. It appears they are only [available](http://www.produceoasis.com/Items_folder/Fruits/Tangelo.html) from December through February from California, Arizona, and Florida.

There seems to be some controversy here… hmmm…
Some [don’t](http://bioag.byu.edu/aghort/aghort100/tangelo.htm) believe an orange is involved… and some [do](http://www.orst.edu/food-resource/a/tangelo.html). Odd.

WHAT? They get me addicted on these little orange gems and now I find out they’re only available till FEBRUARY?? It’s midway through January! AAAAAH!

Oh, funny tangelo story. Well, there’s a lesson in it too. I peeled a tangelo and began to eat it, only to find it was all dessicated and icky and had no taste. The next one was like that too. Most of the bag was all gross and dry. **oldscratch** , in all seriousness, told me “oh, fruit bats must have sucked the juice out of it.” He and **Crack’d** tried to convince me that the dry ones were ones the fruit bats got to.

The lesson? Don’t let **Crack’d** purchase citrus. Every issue we’ve had with the tangelos have been the ones he bought.

ROFL, further hijack from the above site:

> [@](#):

> Although fruit bats are good at flying, landing is another story! Fruit bats can’t land gracefully, and instead must crash into bushes or trees to come to a stop, or try to latch onto a branch as they pass by. Sometimes these crash-landings disturb other fruit bats at the site, and cause noisy fights amongst them.

Am I the only one that envisions a line of fruit bats lined up shooting-gallery style, being scattered by an incoming landing bat like a bunch of bowling pins? Hahahaha…

And I just had the LAST tangelo in the house. Of course, it sucked. No flavor. ☹

I’ve only just discovered this delectable fruit.
I received a shipment last week as a delayed X-mas gift and I’ve already eaten half of them! So sweet and juicy! (They squirt everywhere. Be careful.)

Now I can’t wait to eat the one I brought for lunch!

I found the **don’t** link highly disturbing. The tangelos pictured are so…_shiny_.

Tangelos are a hybrid of _Citrus paradisi_, the grapefruit, and _Citrus reticulata_, the mandarin orange, **also** known as a tangerine.

While they are in season, may I please recommend that all of you hie down to the store and buy some Italian blood oranges (also known as Moros). They have one of the finest flavors of any fruit. Look for the darkest red tinge to the rind and you will have purple flesh inside that is redolent of raspberries and grapefruit.

A tip on making orange juice. Regardless of the quality of your oranges if you squeeze in the juice of one lemon for every quart of OJ, it instantly becomes like the finest squeezed OJ you can imagine. I’m not sure why lemon performs this miracle, but it sure works. Of course, to be most decadent, squeeze pure blood orange juice. You can get away with 1 part in three of regular OJ and still get the flavor though.

As to all of the dry fruit, that is what happens when you use too much plant fertilizer and growth occurs too rapidly. Slow growth promotes both juciness and flavor.

Another one to look for are Clementine tangerines from Spain. These little marvels are a wonder to taste. Almost totally seedless and sweet as a kiss.
