I have XP, a Dell, less than two years old. For some reason the task manager will not stay up. I opened it in safe mode, and it doesn’t seem like anything is going on, at least in safe mode, but why am I not able to see task manager?

Does not stay up? By this you mean you cannot get it to come up at all? Not any of the 3 ways?

1. You can press CTRL + ALT + DEL and click Task Manager from the Windows Security dialog box.
2. You can right click on the Task Bar and click Task Manager.
3. You can press CTRL + SHIFT + ESC and Task Manager will open automatically.

Are you logged on as Admin?

Have you run an AV scan in safe mode? I would boot up in safe mode with networking and run an online scan, this one is the best IMO:

[Trend Micro](http://us.trendmicro.com/us/home/index.html)

On the left, under “popular Tools and Links” run HouseCall.

You almost certainly have an infection that is closing it. You can try [Process Monitor](http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/processmonitor.mspx) instead of Task Manager to see what’s running.

Ok, just got home from errands, will start working on it. I downloaded process manager, and a whole bunch of stuff is coming up, how do I tell what is what?
