Tattoos: What Are People Thinking?

I liked flowers and butterflies then, now, and I think I will later, so I think I’m pretty safe…

I’m going to get either a tat on my back of my leopard gecko or a drawing of Quetzalcoatl (sp) that I found in a book… I’ve had these ideas in my head for ages, I just have yet to have both the time and money to have it done.

My mom started getting tattoos right before Dad left, and now the count is up to 11. After I turn 18 (in a little over 2 months) , she wants to take me to get a tattoo. I’d like to get the Japanese kanji for peace on my left shoulder.
What else was I going to say? I was sure it was an epiphany of some sort, but oh well. wanders off

The two tattoos I intend to get eventually are things that have an incredible amount of meaning to me. I want to get something like this on the back of my neck. Music is my life, and the two colors of the stars are the colors of my guitars. And then I want, between my shoulder blades, a small star with a halo and angel wings, and my mother’s initials and the date of her death, because I’m named after a star and she always called me her little angel.

Now you want a dumb tattoo? A friend of mine got Josh Groban’s initials tattooed on her lower back. She’s a weird one.

Andd… I don’t think I have a point.

When I see some old geezer with a “Death before Dishonor” tattoo,
or “Semper Fi” or “Ranger”, I am not amused- I am proud.
I think to myself, here’s another old Vet that did his time protecting Freedom.

I have a tatoo and am planing on getting another one (within a few years)

I have a 5inch length and 2.5inches width a wavy dragon. I had done it over a year ago and i still love it (can you believe i forget i have it sometimes, and i get a nice surprise everytime i happen to be shirtless infront of the mirror).
It was a spurr of the moment thing (i wanted a tatoo for a long time, but didn’t know what…untill i saw it at the tatooartist’ shop)
It’s on the lower part of my ribcage…it only shows if i happen to weare a 2piece bathingsuit.

I’m considering a “do not resuscitate” message on my pec, but I doubt that’s what you had in mind with the OP.

I’ve not got any tats, but many of my friends do.

All of theirs are in places that would be covered by most clothing, but can still be revealed easily (upper arm, lower back).

And, as one of them says, “It’s not like you look at an 80 year old arm and think ‘Damn, that’d be sexy…if it weren’t for the tat’”

IMHO bad parenting rather than what are they thinking.

I was (am) 36 when I got my first tattoo (a few months ago) on my left pec. I toyed with the idea for 10 years and went with my original idea. I’m pretty sure I’ll like it as much as when I’m 80. I’m already thinking about getting another one (colored this time) but I’ll probably wait at least a year.

I don’t have any tattoos and have never wanted any, but I couldn’t care less if you do. I may think they look ugly or tacky, but it’s your body. Put away your broad brush (or needle).

I’m unaware as to your knowledge of the subject, so I’m probably going to give you at least some information that you already know. that said, here goes:

Make sure you consult someone fluent in Chinese or educated Japanese (or educated Korean for that matter; Chinese characters, Japanese kanji, and Korean hanja are all the same thing). If you go by a dictionary or an inaccurate chart, the character you get may mean peace as a character but used by itself or in conjunction with other characters may mean something else entirely. It would be like tattooing latin root -gress, which if I remember correctly, means to gather coming from the latin word grego, gregere, gressi, gressus(my latin’s gone to crap, but this is more for demonstration purposes, not to establish my linguistic prowess). I don’t think -gress is a tatoo that would be very popular.

To give more validity to my warning, I’ve met a girl back at DLI who intended to get something tatooed on her back, in hanja, that had the word beautiful in it; as I recall; unfortunately, it instead crudely refered to her promiscuity.

Well, I’m beyond the youthful age of 32 even, and I’m going to get a small and delicate tattoo on an area of my body that no-one except my partner, or my doctor - should health issues arise - will ever see.

As far as being really old and looking ridiculous with a tattoo I disagree totally! As was mentioned earlier, I believe it’s a reminder of when one was younger and wanted to do something for themselves which made them feel happy and good about themselves. Where’s the harm in that?

I am soooo looking forward to having it done!

I thought your partner WAS your doctor, nurse.

What design are you thinking of?

Heheh Chavardz, you don’t forget a thing, do you?!! I just figured that maybe my “doctor” might want to take a little holiday, to escape from the stresses, trials and tribulations of being my personal physician at some stage in the future. Hence I may have to consult with a fill-in Locum

Anyway the design will be a most delicate and pretty butterfly… Yeah, yeah, I know  yet another “girly” tattoo… but shrugs that’s just me!

Ender_Will, get out of my head. I was thinking something very similar when I opened this thread.

misstee- the owner of three very kick ass tattoos

My Sister-in-law’s husband is a Tattoo ‘Artist’. During family gatherings he wears sleeveless shirts and everyone has to tolerate his “nekkid woman biker spread eagle on a Harley” which is in a promenant place on his arm. Also he has been married three times so there are ex-wives names displayed with dragons and the like.

My tattoo turns 21 in 04. Holy crap! It’s old enough to drink!! I put a lot of thought in to mine and twenty years later, while it needs a little touch up, I still love it. And the tat artist that did mine is still in business and doing well, so I know I can go back to the creator for my touch up.

My son is dating an Egyptian-Christian girl (raised that way, anyway…) and her family is very hard-core conservative. She waitresses with my son at the Hard Rock Cafe. Anyhoo, her parents wanted her to go back to school so she doesn’t end up with a “tattooed waiter” (that would be my son). I told him to start looking, as her family will never accept his athiestic, tattooed, table-waiting self.

I didn’t get my first tattoo until well into my thirties. I took my time and worked out some custom celtic knotwork around my right wrist with the tattoo artist. I can cover it with a long sleeve shirt if need be, and working in DC it is neccessary sometimes. I am not, even for a minute, sorry I got it. The design has meaning to me and is unique. I am sure that if I live to be 80, I’ll look at it and smile.
