The truly dangerous talk amongst these assholes is that of refusing to raise the debt limit. What this implies to all of our creditors is that the US would default on its loans and the “full faith and credit” of our country would come into doubt. Can you say “worldwide economic collapse”?

But since it would happen while Obama is president, it’s all good.

Lately it’s seemed tome to be more “Spending cuts!” etc. Problem is, you can’t pin 'em down on what spending to cut, other than “Obamacare”, whatever the hell they define that as. And the old perennial “wastefraudandabuse”.

So that’s why you’re hearing talk even from the likes of Boehner now about the need to have an “adult conversation”. IOW even their leadership doesn’t think their approach is “adult”. And, being incoherent, it can’t survive the acceptance of responsibility.

Last summer, there was an effort among Tea Partiers to have the lame duck congressional session canceled just to make sure the soon-to-be-defeated Democrats wouldn’t pass legislation like the cap-and-trade bill and proposed tax increases as supposedly a big FU to the voters as they went out the door. That campaign mostly dissipated when the cap-and-trade bill was set aside by the Senate and the matter of the expiring Bush tax cuts was postponed until after the election. You would think the fact that the lame duck session eventually extended the Bush tax cuts for another two years might’ve somewhat placated the Teabaggers and their ilk but there’s no satisfying these people. Thus, they are now outraged over the repealing of DADT, the passage of the arms-control treaty, and the (gasp!) granting of medical benefits to the 9/11 rescue workers.

Right, ending lame duck sessions is not a silly idea at all. Too bad this guy is only calling for it on a partisan basis, not a small-d democratic one.

I heard somewhere (probably Rachel Maddow) that one of the freshman Tea Party congresscritters wants to introduce that legislation when the new Congress convenes tomorrow. He’ll be slapped down in short order and probably assigned to the Subcommittee on Livestock, Dairy, and Poultry or something similar as punishment.

Gee, if the Founding Fathers wanted that they’d put it in the Constitution. Funny how that only works for stuff they wanted.

Where were they and their mandate after 2008 when the
Republicans got their ass handed to them, far more than this year? Or 2006. Hypocritical scum.

> I read a very interesting article (sorry, can’t find the link) that traces the facet of American politics that is currently being occupied by the Tea Party back hundreds of years. The common thread is that they are the folks who side with the wealthy elites against their own interests because they’d rather go without than let some “hated other” get anything. Their stated reasons for feeling as they do are usually lofty, but on examination they are completely inconsistent with anything except with being against non-white non-Christians.
>
> This trend goes back at least as far as the Civil War, when poor Southern whites fought on behalf of wealthy land owners (a tiny, tiny percent of the population).

Don’t know that article, but [this one](http://www.salon.com/news/tea_parties/index.html?story=/opinion/feature/2010/09/21/lind_tea_party_whiskey_rebellion) draws interesting parallels between the TP and the Whiskey Rebellion.

> [@](#):
>
> From the Whiskey Rebels to the Confederates to the Tea Party movement, there has been a minority tradition that viewed the American Revolution as a rebellion against government as such, rather than as a revolution on behalf of popular government. And from Thomas Jefferson to Newt Gingrich, crafty demagogues, when they are out of power, have portrayed the elected representatives of the American people as a tyrannical, alien force, only to exercise the full powers of the government without apology once they have successfully ridden paranoia to power.

To be fair, the GOP really didn’t have any say in the matter. Do recall that the ‘Tea Party’ is not a cohesive group, and was largely rebelling against the GOP itself. Within the large group of people who consider themselves some flavor of ‘conservative,’ there is a civil war ongoing. The insergents labeled ‘Tea Party’ have set a major ambush, and the reast of the GOP hasn’t figured out yet how to respond.

Plausibly true, and not necessarily a bad thing, IMO.

My favorite one of these was an interview I heard the day after the election. It was right after E-Day and ‘Here and Now’ had a woman who was leader of one of the three largest Tea Party groups on. The exchange went something like this:

“OK, you’ve won. What do you think congress should do?”
“Cut the budget”
“OK, what part?”
“The budget.”
“What part of the budget?”
(pause)“The budget.”
“Moving on…”

you’d think she’d be aware that the budget is compartmentalized, if she was a leader. Possible answers could have been: “Entitlements” “Welfare programs” “Defense” “Foreign aid.” Of course, all these answers invite further questions, some of which are quite sharp and pointy. Which is why a favorite answer is: “Well, we can start with earmarks and cutting government waste.” That always sounds good. Never seems to HAPPEN but it sounds good.
